As Anil Sharma's Apne, starring Dharmendra and his two sons Sunny and Bobby Deol gets set for release, we flashback to Randhir Kapoor's 1971 film Kal Aaj Aur Kal in which three generations of the Kapoors acted together.
Randhir Kapoor, Raj Kapoor's eldest son made his acting and directing debut with this film about the generation gap, that in a vague way mirrored what was happening in his own family.
In Kal Aaj Aur Kal, Ram (Raj Kapoor) is happy when his son Rajesh returns to India from London and along with the family patriarch Diwansaheb (Prithviraj Kapoor), all three generations live under the same roof.
However, the grandfather is traditional, the grandson is modern and independent, and the father is caught helplessly between the two. Things come to a head, when Rajesh refuses to marry a girl of the grandfather's choice, because he is in love with Monica (Babita). Saddened by what is going on in the home, Ram decides to leave, and then things start moving towards understanding and conciliation between the other two.
Movielore of the time, speculated on the 'real-life' echoes in the movie. Randhir Kapoor had wanted to marry Babita and the family was reportedly opposed to the match with an actress, who had also starred opposite Randhir's uncles Shammi and Shashi Kapoor. Of course true love won, even though the real-life story did not have a happy end, as the marriage did not last for too long.
Like all RK banner films, this one too had great music by Shankar-Jaikishen. Songs like Aap yahan aaye kis liye, Tick tick chalti ja aye ghadi, Bhanwre ki gunjan hai mera dil and Jab main hunga saath saal ka, aur tun hongi pachpan ki.
