KAL - Yesterday & Tomorrow is about relationships, friendships, change, the
city and memories. The film is a fast-paced suspense, set in the new,
globalised Mumbai.
It is about growing up in a big city and traces the lives of a group of five
college friends and the twists and turns they take as they make their way
through the world. KAL - Yesterday & Tomorrow juxtaposes the past with the
present.
The film is an original story that takes a realistic look at Mumbai's
upper-middle class youth who live in a city where billboards, brands,
traffic, congestion, overcrowding, affluence and poverty all co-exist. Not
necessarily happily ever after.
Bhavna and Tarun were in love. They, and everyone else thought they would
get married one day. But then Tarun left Bhavna for her best friend, Maya,
who was the daughter of an industrialist. It seemed that Tarunšs ambition had got the better of him. Whatever the reason, they got married and Bhavna was left, alone.
The film starts one year later. Bhavna has not yet recovered from the
betrayal of her two closest friends, when one night Tarun turns up at her
house. He ends up staying there the whole night. The next morning when
Bhavna goes to work, the breaking news is that Maya, Tarunšs wife and her ex-best friend, has been found dead. Murdered. Now she unwittingly becomes Tarun's alibi - but is she being used?
An outsider, Rohan Sehgal, a reporter for a news channel, narrates the story
to us. He investigates the Maya Haksar murder case because he is assigned the story, but takes a keener interest in it because he is attracted to
Bhavna.
This movie is about Bhavna's search to uncover the truth of what happened
between the victim, Maya and the prime suspect, Tarun, both were once her close friends, both of whom had betrayed her. Bhavna discovers many of the clues lie in her past. Through her search, she begins to understand what happened to her group of friends; the bunch of college kids and who they grew up to be. She starts to see her family and friends, many of whom are the powerful people who control the city, in a different light. As Bhavna tries to find out who killed her friend, she discovers many of the answers lie in the past. Thus, the title KAL, because in Hindi, the word for yesterday and tomorrow is the same KAL.
