Devang Patel, who zoomed into limelight with ' Meri Marzi ' from ' Gambler ' about a decade back and followed up the success with his series of spoofy albums - ' Patel Scope ', is launched as a hero in ' Smile Please ' that also stars debutants Sajid Ali, Avantika and Nylaas with Shakti Kapoor. Produced by Nilesh Mehta, Imtiaz Patel and Yogesh Lakhani, 'Smile Please' is a romantic comedy directed by Yunus Patel, has lyrics by Vinay Dave and music by (who else but) Devang Patel. This fun-filled album promises to bring a smile on the face. Let's see if the promise is kept!
Opening number ' Dandruff ' is a spoof on the romantic love songs and makes fun of everything from falling hair to colored teeth to body odour to pimples. Sung by Devang and Sunidhi Chauhan, the number may be picked up by the kids in the age group of 5-12 but there is not much scope for the song beyond that. Probably the makers of the song thought that the number would be a rage and hence have exclusively printed the lyrics of the song inside the album cover. But then it doesn't seem to be worth it!!
Devang joins with Hema Sardesai and Javed Ali to sing ' Khao Pio ' that borrows it's lyrics from, hold your breath, various components of the finance world, internet world, computer components and cricket terminology. Whoosh! Quite a lot of thought must have gone in by Vinay Dave in the number but then the result is again disappointing. Mediocre music, amateurish singing and down market approach towards the entire situation makes the number unbearable.
' ABCD 123 - Bolo Darling Kab Ho Free ' - these are the lyrics of this Shaan-Devang Patel number that tries to be romantic. With lyrics like this, we are not in mood to write anything more. Are you in mood to read more? Till the number reaches to the 'Z' mark after going through all the letters from A-Z, one is 'zzzzzzzz' in sleep and needs a scream (literally) to wake up !! Probably that's the reason why there is ' Bhoot Disco ' placed soon after that seems to be some horribly imaginative work of the composer. A shrieky piece of music, it can be a strong contender to be one of the worst tracks composed, sung and placed in this part of the century!! The case is strengthened when one hears to the ' Reprise ' version of the same that repeats on the other side of the album.
Title song ' Smile Please ' arrives quite late in the day and is mainly a philosophical number about the benefits of smiling. Sorry Mr. Patel, but we still aren't smiling. How much so ever, you may try now, but the damage has already been done by the series of some poorly composed songs in the first half of the album. Stylebhai's rap is incorporated towards the middle of the number but that too of not much avail. Audio wise, the number is not as jarring as the previous numbers and is to some extent sober, but still not the least likeable.
'Jodi' of Priti and Pinky come together to sing ' Babuji ' that has first few seconds going well for it. But as soon as this take on the 50s style composition it gets into the territory of 'naya model' and 'purana engine' and some further inane stuff, you realize that there is absolutely no hope left from the album. Lyrics may cater to only one segment of the audience and chances for that too are minimal.
The first ever 'normal' song comes in the form of ' Fir Na Kehna ' that is a love duet by Shaan and Sujata Trivedi. Sorry, but even the presence of Shaan can't help this poor man's take on ' Dil Dooba Dil Dooba ' from ' Khakee '. A very week composition, it at least manages to do something good - it marks an end to the album.
Very poor! There are the best two words to describe this colossal failure.
