When it comes to Rahul Bose, the obvious thing one expects is a quality product. OK, so Mumbai Matinee was an exception but if one looks at his other works like Thakshak, Mr. & Mrs. Iyer, Jhankaar Beats, Chameli and Everybody Says I Am Fine amongst others, one is rest assured that ' White Noise ' too would appeal to its niche audience. Directed by Vinta Nanda and starring Koel Puri, Aryan Vaid and Mona Ambegaonkar in lead roles, White Noise has a rather interesting tagline "Each happiness has a life”! Set in the highflying city of Mumbai, ' White Noise ' is a venture primarily for an urban audience. A Shringar Films presentation, this English film has all songs in English composed by Ashutosh Pathak and Dhruv Ghanekar. Produced by Uday Watsa, Mohanjit Singh and Vinta Nanda, " White Noise " is Nanda's own autobiographical story of a TV writer and her relationship with a married software producer.
Song ' In the Air ' appears in two versions - 1 and 2 - that are primarily extensions of each other. Lyrics are the key strength of this number that go as
Close your eyes and see the break of tomorrow
A distant rumble echoes through the air
A muffled cry, a wail of subtle sorrow
I can feel it in the air
With music that starts off slowly but catches pace soon after, it has an 'Enigma' genre of feel around it. Credit it to the female vocals that give the number a haunting effect, it does impress and stays with you. Even more when the version 2 with male vocals comes up that manages to demonstrate the mood of the protagonist to the 'T'.
Following track ' Resonate ' is another word heavy song that is sheer poetry and would be mainly appreciated by those who have a great command over the language and are able to identify with the theme of the composition. Don't expect a regular moviegoer to be able to comprehend lyrics like
I can feel it resonate inside this hollow space
I can hear it reverberate remnants of your face
This sensorial overflow has frozen my tracks
I can feel your undertow trying to pull me back
But all said and done, the music does come fine to ears and makes for a nice hearing.
Song about support, love and looking up in life comes up in the shape of ' Slide ', that is about providing a ray of hope to the one you love! With simple lyrics that anyone can easily relate to ' Slide ' is the most identifiable number in the entire album so far and works well with the listener.
' SOS Tonight ' is another poetic number that is not for an average man to decipher and is restricted to the intelligentsia class to relate to. A song about separation, pain and betrayal is composed as ' Stone ' that is the last song in the album. Another one of the good numbers in the album, it has the right display of emotions through a male voice that catches your attention.
' White Noise ' can be rightly termed as an emotional album that doesn't fall into the trap of rock or a pop genre to suit to an urban taste. Instead it sticks to its honest intentions with which it has been composed hence keeping any commercial ingredients out. Yes, in the bargain it looses out in having an all out appeal for everyone but for a niche urban audience, the music is a nice experience. Also, ' White Noise ' does not belong to that category of music albums that stay till the movie's release and then fade out. Instead it is one of those albums that run primarily with word of mouth and continue to make inroads into people's music collection regardless of the movie's stay at the theatres.
