More than a decade ago came an action movie starring Vinod Khanna and Bhanupriya - 'Surya'. Same title is used for this
Milind Soman starrer which is directed by Partho Ghosh (Agnisakshi, Yugpurush and most recently Maseeha). Lucky star
Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. makes it's first foray into movies (they started off with music albums a few months back). Aadesh
Srivastava and Sameer have been roped in to handle the music department.
Rarely has there been so much importance given to one single item as has been in the case of 'Paijaniya'. Centrespread of
the lead dancer Rakhi Sawant (the seductress vamp of Churala Liya Hai Tumne and Om) has been laid out on the album inlay
card and the track has been placed as the first song in the album. TV promos of the number too have begun in full swing. But
the sad part is that the number is far from being impressive !! The number has a down market feel about it and fails to ignite
the same heat as the raunchy 'Babuji Zara Dheere Chalo' from Dum which falls in the same category. Except from some
uninhibited flesh display by Rakhi, there is nothing great shakes about this track by Vasundhara Das and Kirti Sagathia -
either tune wise or singing wise !!
'Dil Jo Na Keh Saka' is an average track that by Alka Yagnik, Abhijeet and Kirti Sagathia that just passes on with the
situation. It is strange to see Abhijeet, who is doing so well currently with his private albums, being so average here. Or
probably we expect every song of his to be good !! 'Chal Jhoome Masti Mein' by Shail and Baby is supposed to be a fun song
with full of energy but it nowhere falls near to being exciting. A song that doesn't even fall in the time pass category, it has
hardly any recollection element in it.
'Ishq Da Challa' by Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik and Sneha Pant is supposedly designed as a romantic family track but is it so
functional that you wonder it is done by the same Aadesh Srivastava who is capable of giving such tuneful numbers in the
recent Chalte Chalte. Guess how the overall setup of the movie can affect one's work !!
'Shiv Shankar' by Udit Narayan and Amrish Puri is another song about God's praise (in quick succession after 'O Mere Kishen
Kanhaiya' from Kaise Kahoon Ke Pyaar Hai). A situational number, it neither attempts nor is successful to be another 'Jai
Maa Kaali (also rendered by Amrish Puri in Karan Arjun)
'Hulchul' by Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik is the only passable track in Surya. In any other big banner movie or a grander
setup, even 'Huchul' may have been ignored all together, but since Surya is so much below average, even this turns out to be
a recognizable track.
Overall, it's a very weak album that may not help pulling in the crowds (except for may be 'Paijaniya' !!). Now it is all left to the
story, star cast and the director to elevate the movie's prospects at the box office !!
