  Music Reviews
By Joginder Tuteja, November 24, 2004 - 16:04 IST

Pooja Bhatt know how to keep her movies in news. If ' Jism ' was popular for all the known reasons, ' Paap ' too made headlines; at least till the time it was released. Though it fizzled out soon after, Pooja Bhatt didn't loose heart and started work on ' Rog '. Starring an 'intelligent woman's ideal man - Irrfan Khan' (that's how he is known in the film circle these days!) and South African model Ilene Hamman, who makes her film debut, ' Rog ' is psychological crime thriller woven around a love story. With music by M M Kreem, ' Rog ' is co-produced by Sujit Kumar Singh, written by Mahesh Bhatt and directed by Himanshu Brambhatt.

KK starts the album with a sober lyric heavy number ' Maine Dil Se Kaha ' that is a ' ghazal ' presented in a contemporary way. Written by Nilesh Mishra, it mixes the feeling of joy, sorrow and pain. There is a slight shade of the classic ' Na Tum Hamein Jaano - Na Hum Tumhe Jaane ' intermittently. Overall the number is good, but only for those who want something distinctly different from regular ' pyaar mohabbat ishq vishq ' stuff.

Comes next ' Tere Is Jahaan Mein ' that is a soft romantic song again by KK but this time written by Sayeed Quadri. Presentation is again unique and the song fits well for a romantic drive in the night on a highway. MM Kreem's arrangements are noteworthy for their soberness.

He also comes behind the mike in the Neelesh Mishra written ghazal ' Khoobsurat ' that is of the kind that Pankaj Udhas excels in. One does misses him at this point but then MM Kreem is good in his own way as well. Masses may not go all out for the song but for the classy audience, it is a treat. Udit Narayan too gets to do a solo with 'Khoobsurat' that cuts well with the music lovers again.

KK sings ' Guzar Na Jaaye ', which is his third song in the album. Shreya Ghoshal gives him company in this erotic number that has deep lyrics by Neelesh Mishra. A slow moving haunting number, it is again not of a kind that you would be singing round the town but would love to listen to in peace! KK is excellent while Shreya gives him good company. She also returns to do a solo and consolidates her position on the music front. With the kind of work she has done in the recent past, she should be a front runner on the singing circuit with Alka Yagnik and Sunidhi Chauhan !!

Haunting effect is back with the ' Rog Theme ' that is a league apart from the regular instrumental/theme music in any other Bollywood potboiler. Produced by Music Mushrooms, it is composed, arranged and mixed by Jaideep, Kurt and Samrat who do a great job. Unique in its style and mood, this can give competition to an instrumental from any reputed international band.

Written and produced by Gaudi, there is another instrumental cum song in the shape of ' Sufani ' that is more like a mix of western and lounge music. Excellent piece of composition, it is an exciting and a unique experience overall.

Thanks goodness for composers like MM Kreem and Sandesh Shandliya ( Socha Na Tha ) who still give a hope to Bollywood when it comes to something genuinely 'different'! These are the guys who may not reach all out to the masses, but for the select few audience who crave for quality music that breaks boundaries, they are just the ones.

Music by MM Kreem in ' Rog ' should complete the trilogy of great music (after ' Jism ' to ' Paap '). One hopes that Pooja Bhatt doesn't restrict herself to these three movies and gives us more such fine pieces of beautiful compositions.

If you like soft and sober music, 'Rog' is the one for you.
