Dino Morea, Mahima Chaudhary and Suman Ranganathan - now this is one casting that would definitely surprise many due to it being unique and unpredictable. Moreover, all the three actors come from different stream of films altogether. While Mahima was last seen in a mature adult drama ' Dobara ', Dino has been juggling between playing chocolate boy to a baddy ( Rakht ) and Suman is seen on and off in varied flicks like ' Baghban ' to ' Market ' to ' Ishq Qayamat '. All of them are cast together in Shubir S. Mukerji's ' Gumnaam - The Unknown ' that is directed by Neeraj Pathak, and has song'n'dance handled by Nadeem Shravan and Sameer.
' Mohabbat Se Zyaada ' comes from the usual territory of Nadeem Shravan and in any other big movie album; it would have been placed as a fifth or a sixth track in the CD. That's because it is not bad at all or unpleasant but again not of a kind that needs top placement in an album. Lyrics are run of the mill while Udit Narayan and Shreya Ghoshal come, do their job and go home! Mahima does expose a bit in the number and does well there!
Version 8.0 off for ' Ishq ' comes in the shape of ' Zaalim Ishq ' that is surprisingly quite catchy and one wonders why it is not on air yet. The track is speedy, hold-no-bar, quite foot tapping and is aided by non-stop orchestra that doesn't get slow down even for a moment. Any other big star dancing to the number's beat and the song would have been quite popular so far. Shaan and Sunidhi Chauhan are at the top of their vocals and the number makes for a good dance track in the album.
Another pleasant surprise is to see the album actually building on in a gradual fashion with ' Naa Hone Denge ' sounding cute again. Another love song from the Nadeem-Shravan-Sameer combo music bank, it is laced with late 90's style but still sounds good and evergreen. Kumar Sanu and Alka Yagnik seem to be singing with a smile on their face and the track turns out to be lively and better than one expected from the musical score of this movie. Yes, the number won't be remembered 6 months from now, but in the flow of the album, it entertains and this is what one expected from 'Gumnaam'.
Adnan Sami and Shreya Ghoshal come together in a song ' Ishq Ne Kitna ' that belongs to ' dard-e-judaai ' genre and is not more than a gap-filler. In fact ' Yaad Aaye ' from ' Muskaan ' by Adnan that belonged to a similar genre was somehow better. A new singer Monika Nath is introduced to sing ' Mohabbat Se Zyaada ' again and she can claim to be one of the most uninspiring discoveries of Nadeem Shravan so far. Her voice seems to keep breaking and is of a kind that could probably match for a folk number! Probably Nadeem Shravan thought otherwise and have placed her voice not once but twice with an added duet coming by with Udit Narayan.
A climax-kind song ' Dhoke Mein Naa Aana ' is sung by Abhijeet, Alka Yagnik and Sarika and gives an impression of the album slipping back after getting into a good position after first three songs. The number doesn't impress at all and one feels that it wasn't a bad decision at all for the music company and the producers to keep ' Mohabbat Se', 'Zaalim Ishq' and ' Naa Hone Denge ' at the beginning of the album. Probably that's the reason why ' Naa Hone Denge ' comes again at the end of the album, this time in a ' Club Mix ' by DJ Nasha. Thankfully it is good and allows you to be cheerful again after some sad experience with last few songs.
' Gumnaam ' turns out to be a mix affair in the end with none of the songs being out rightly blockbusters or horribly bad. The 'Nadeem Shravan' tag ensures that there are a couple of tunes that would get some decent sales figures for the album.
Average - just about!
