Shahid Kapoor is on the roll. After the success of ' Ishq Vishq ' and an acclaimed performance in ' Fida ' that was truly 'different', he does something that can make him confident on winning full marks - a frothy love story cum comedy ' Dil Maange More !' - that should cut across generations! And what more could he ask from director Ananth Narayan Mahadevan (who gave an honest but unsuccessful ' Dil Vil Pyaar Vyaar ' earlier) who has pitted him against three beauties - Tulip Joshi (known as Sanjana from ' Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai '), Ayesha Takia ( Taarzan - The Wonder Car, Socha Na Tha ) and Soha Ali Khan - who makes her Bollywood debut. A Nitin Manmohan presentation, DMM is a Nikhil Panchamiya production that has music by Himesh Reshammiya and lyrics by Sameer.
Billed as the 'Ultimate Romantic Comedy', DMM begins with rock'n'roll ' Gustakh Dil Tere Liye ' that is 21st century take on the vintage stage numbers by Shammi Kapoor and Sharmila Tagore. Shahid perfects the steps of Shammi saab (in fact, he even outdoes him at places) while Soha is the carbon copy of her mom from her ' Kashmir Ki Kali ' days. Costumes are nostalgic, dance steps a mix of vintage and contemporary, music is fast paced while choreography is youthful. In all, a hit material by Sonu Nigam and Sunidhi Chauhan that should be publicized much more aggressively than it is being done currently.
' Aisa Deewana ' is even a step ahead when it comes to humming a number and remembering it for some time to come. In the same style as ' Nazar Nazar ' from Fida (and the resemblance just ends here), ' Aisa Deewana ', that also comes with an instrumental , is melodious, fresh, has a youthful appeal and boasts of good outdoor locations. Okay, so Shahid just can't get over the Shahrukh Khan hangover, but then who actually minds that! Alka Yagnik is effortless in her rendition and fits the profile of all the heroines while Sonu is good as always.
' Shiqwa Bhi Tumse ' that follows next is average and is about 'I hate you, I have so many complains but then I still love you'. A racy track that has been given a pop feel, it is third song in a row for Sonu Nigam who is as energetic as he was in ' Ye Dil ' from ' Pardes '. The fate of this song depends upon the long run of the movie because otherwise it may just be one other song from the hundreds of songs getting released every month. This is the track that has the theme of ' Dil Maange More ' in the background. The number also appears in a sad version but apart from the theme, is hardly sad in terms of rendition and pace!
Opening of ' Maine Chun Liya ' is quite similar to the opening of the title song of ' Tere Naam ' and the very first few seconds of the number itself make the song successful. The song is on the lines of Laxmikant Pyarelal style of music and follows the traditional route. Udit Narayan and Shreya Ghoshal sugar coated singing further elevates the song and it shouldn't be much far before the number hits the tube. This is a kind of melodious number that always works!
' Kubaku Mujhe Tu Nazar Aaye ' (Okay, that's not a spelling mistake - it is really something that goes like K-U-B-A-K-U !) Anyone apart from Mr. Sameer who can explain the meaning of this gets an assured treat. Overall the song by Shaan and Jayesh is just about OK and in spite of Shahid chipping in between with his sweet nothings, the song just goes some distance and nothing beyond that to be a Top 10 material.
' O Makhne Ve ' is actually the song that has the tagline of DMM in the background throughout i.e. 'Why Does It Happen In Love?' Don't go by the first few words of the song, as it is not yet another Punjabi bhangra pop track. It is a conventional dance floor song in the lines of ' Let's Do Balle Balle ' from Fida and is a potential popular number. Yes, the lyrics are no great shakes but energetic rendition by KK and Sunidhi Chauhan ensure that the song delivers what it promised to at the very onset.
Youthful appeal, star presence of Shahid, an extremely catchy title and some good music would obviously ensure that the album sales are good. Album could have been an out and out winner but for a couple of songs that somehow loose the momentum as set by the initial songs. Nevertheless the overall effect is still good and you don't really mind going for the album.
Go ahead! DMM is a good choice for you!
