By Joginder Tuteja, September 13, 2004 - 16:01 IST

August-September have been the months of soundtracks of various small films getting released. ' Dil  Becahara Pyaar Ka Maara', 'Smile Please', 'Let's Enjoy', 'Tauba Tauba' are a few names that can be mentioned in this category. A M.C. Pandey production directed by debutant Onkar Nath Mishra, the film is a frothy love story cum comedy about three love 'jodis' played by Vikas Kalantri ( Nayee Padosan, Dukaan ), Aslam Khan, Aman Sondhi, Divya Palat (who has played bit roles in ' Masti', 'Krishna Cottage ' and is now in the news for 'The Graduate', a play she has directed with Zeenat Aman in lead), Mallika Kapur and Jonita Doda. Rajpal Yadav plays a comic villain who comes across as a spanner in this love story. Nikhil Vinay, who off late have finally started getting independent ventures without sharing credits with other composers are behind the music of the movie that has lyrics by Praveen Bhardwaj and Rajeshwar Mishra.

Title song ' Dil Bechara Pyaar Ka Maara ' is a cute and nice sugar coated love song that is hummable to some extent. There is nothing in the song written by Praveen Bhardwaj that you haven't witnessed before but all credit to the singers Udit Narayan and Shreya Ghoshal who raise the standard of the number with their inspired singing. Even after two decades in the music world, Udit still carries with him passion for singing and that shows (That's the reason why he sings the solo version as well). Ditto for Shreya whose vocals are more suited to the Bollywood scene now and does well here. The only thing she is in need of now is a series of some hit tracks that can get her the same popularity as she got for her numbers in ' Devdas ' and ' Jism '.

The man who was noticed for his singing in the melodious song ' Waada Raha ' in ' Khakee ' re-spells his name from 'Arnab' to 'Arunab' Chakravorty and sings ' Masoom Sa Ek Chehra '. It makes for a fine hearing due to its music and settles down to being average. Lyrics by Praveen Bhardwaj are extremely average and Arunab will have to wait for a few more numbers before he actually makes a name in the industry.

' Jaane Kya Asar Tera Hua ', written by Rajeshwar Mishra is a marginally better number than the previous and is a quite peaceful hearing. The song mainly focuses on the singing rather than instruments in the background and does well to an extent. While Sonu Nigam is routine, Shreya Ghoshal (who also sings a solo of the same track) impresses with her sweet girlish voice.

After ' Oh What A Babe ' in ' Rakht ' comes ' O Baby ' that is sung by Shriram Ayar. In the very beginning, it gives an impression of being inspired from the ' Nayee Padosan ' soundtrack as it is a fusion of pop, South Indian classical and Punjabi bhangra. The result is that audio wise the song doesn't go anywhere. The number is completely situational and its only chances to make an impact are if it is blended and presented well with the situation. Otherwise the number is extremely jarring and makes for an immediate skip.

If this wasn't enough, the misery continues with ' Hari Tum ' that seems to have been intentionally sung badly by Shriram Ayyar as per the demand of the situation. Some sanity is brought back to this 'bhajan' by Priya Bhattacharya who sings the major part. But wherever the male vocals come into play, it becomes intolerable to sit through the number. Probably that was the demand of the situation but then why would one want hear to such out-of-synch notes?

80s style item number is on display with ' Chudion Ne Kiya Aisa Shor ' by the trio of Shreya Ghoshal, Shaswati Fukan and Priya Bhattacharya that is plain mediocre. A very average composition that seems to have required minimal effort to be composed due to its routine tune, it has some rap portion also by Rahul B. Seth that is hardly impressive. A forgettable number by all accounts, it confirms that the album is already on its downfall so far.

After two poor tracks ' O Baby ' and ' Hari Tum ', Shriram finally get to do something worthwhile in the bhajan ' Manava Tu ' that is a fusion of Indian classical and western music. Again, the number fails to lift beyond being plain average and turns out to be situational. Forgettable!

Some inane number about a poor singer, 'gadha' (donkey), and the rest is mixed up as ' Bhago Bhago ' that is a poor take on ' Meri Pyaari Bindu ' of ' Padosan '. A number that would be turned off even by the most patient music lover on this planet, it fails on all accounts.

One wonders what were the makers of this album thinking while composing it. Were they wrongly under impression that in the name of situational comedy and some spoof, their album will be picked up by dozens? Well, they will be proved wrong and that too in a big way!! Extremely disappointing as one expected some sane tracks from an album that has Nikhil Vinay on the credits.
