Bollywood continues to spin different themes with each passing month. And thankfully the tag of 'crossover' or 'multiplex' movie is slowly but surely fading away. In the phase when the thin line between either being 'different' or an 'entertainer' slowly fading away comes 7 1/2 Phere, a breezy light hearted comedy based on a "sting operation" of a different kind. Set in a household where a marriage is in progress, the movie stars Juhi Chawla in a principal role [playing a media personality for the second time after 'Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani] with Irrfan Khan in lead, who has developed a penchant for enacting different characters in most of his movies. Produced by Nimit Modawal, Harshvardhan and Sonal Modawal, 7 1/2 Phere is directed by debutante Ishaan Trivedi and has music by Shantanu Moitra (Hazaaron Khwahishen Aisi, Parineeta, Yahaan).
The album comprises of primarily two original songs with the rest of the tracks being an interesting compilation of some other tracks from past and present. The first to come is a celebration song that fits the setting of the movie perfectly. A track that begins decently as a typical 'dhol-dholki ladies sangeet' song by Sunidhi Chauhan, it has some twists and turns during its duration with the rhythm changing from traditional to western and back to traditional. Subrat Sinha and Honey Trehan write the lyrics for this song that is easily identifiable amongst the North Indian audiences due to a traditional feel.
Shantanu Moitra comes up with yet another melody after his tracks in 'Parineeta' and 'Yahaan' with well-composed 'Kyun Aaj Kal'. A track about "why are my thoughts straying away due to love?" it is sung beautifully by newcomer Antara Choudhary. Subrat Sinha's poetry is visible in each and every line of this moderately paced song that sounds more like a non-film number and turns out to be a decent and peaceful hearing.
From here on begins a compilation of some tracks that are not a part of the movie. First to go is Shazia Manzor's 'Ghar Aaja Soniye' that has been entertaining the lovers of genuinely good music for years now. Bally Jagpat composes for this extraordinary mix of rhythm and melody and one wonders why the musician isn't heard much more.
Next to follow is the classic 'Jiya Jale' from 'Dil Se' that is hot favorite even today on number of music channels. The famous one liner of 'You a Virgin?' keeps coming up at regular intervals throughout the track that appears in a 'Remix'. One can't help but wonder why was this beautiful track by A.R.Rehman and Lata Mangeshkar ever allowed to be touched. This 'virginal' track should have been just left all alone without being interfered with at all! Another track from the same movie that appears in a remix is the title song 'Dil Se Re' and its not as disappointing as the remix of 'Jiya Jale' due to its pace and rhythm.
'Aika Dhondiba' based on Marathi folk music makes an appearance once again as a part of this compilation. This time it has been recreated in a more contemporary fashion and is sung by newcomer Pronali Chaliha. Written by Manrel Gaikwad and composed by Shantanu Moitra, it is fine but one still misses the pace and rhythm of the ever popular original folk track.
Yet another number that could have been a good choice and adds on to the compilation is Jaanbaaz's 'Tera Saath Hai Kitna Pyaara'. Babul Supriyo and Anupama Deshpande sing the cover version of the track and surprisingly the song turns out to be quite listless. Extremely average both in terms of singing and musical arrangements, it just falls flat on its face and doesn't add any value to the album. A complete miss! Thankfully Kalyanji Anandji are not let down for the second time in quick succession in 'Yeh Mera Dil Yaar Ka Deewana' that manages to sustain some credibility due to Hema Sardesai's efforts.
Ironical as it may sound; in spite of an 'original' theme of the movie, the album has mainly relied upon some 'remixes' and 'cover versions'. '7 1/2 Phere' isn't really an album that one would really be passionate about hearing time and again. With just a song or two really making some impression, one is highly disappointed with the final results due to overall album being lackluster. Instead of the songs, one would rather wait to catch the movie that releases this 29th of July.
