Ek Chhoti Si Love Story, Market, Paisa Vasool, Tum and now Chahat-Ek Nasha. One expected to read a much better lineage of movies from an actress of the caliber of Manisha Koirala whose initial profile ran as Saudagar, 1942-A Love Story, Bombay, Dil Se and Khamoshi. Ditto for Preeti Jhangiani who started off with Rajshri's music videos, graduated with a lead (and the most strong) female role in 'Mohabbatein' and is now struggling to stay afloat. Co-starring Manisha and Preeti is super-model Aryan Vaid who was well received in 'Market'. A Chamunda Films presentation, 'Chaahat Ek Nasha' is a Umesh Chauhan production directed by Jai Prakash with music and lyrics by Anand Raj Anand and Praveen Bhardwaj respectively. With attraction, lust and stardom as the backdrop, one can only hope that 'Chaahat' manages to hold on its own and do well at the box office.
A safe 'running around the trees, singing around the bushes' song marks the beginning of the album. 'Yeh Chehra' is a harmless composition that is sung well by Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik and follows the route of melody. A sweet sounding soothing number, it turns out to be quite unexpected as one just expected 6 item numbers in a row for 'Chaahat'. Nevertheless a nice beginning that brings on a pleasant surprise.
Well, the surprise factor continues with 'Dil Ki Baatein' by Babul Supriyo, Sunidhi Chauhan and Shreya Ghoshal. With a look and feel of a party number with the three lead actors exchanging notes about their experiences with love and 'chaahat', it makes for an interesting hearing with due credit to the lyricist Praveen Bhardwaj. OK, so we don't have a chartbuster in the making but then with a zero expectation to begin with, it is no less a bargain. The number also has Vinod Rathod joining in but surprisingly (and there is no shortage of surprises here !!), he is not credited on the inlay card.
Oldie 'Jab Chaye Mera Jadoo' is revisited with lyrics that go as 'Jaadu Jab Mera Chaye' in the song 'Mallika', which is the screen name of the character of a Pop diva played by Manisha Koirala. The number is average but the good part is that it is without any unnecessary frills and thrills and seductive overtones that do more harm to a song than good. A stage number, it is about 'I am the star who makes people bend on their knees!!'
A number about 'raat', 'barsaat' and 'yaar ka saath' is arranged as 'Ishq Ki Raat' that is thankfully not termed as 'Ishq Andhera' as in 'Ishq Kameena', 'Ishq Zaalim', 'Ishq Samundar', 'Ishq Nikamma' or 'Ishq Tezaab'. The number that could have been of much better effect if composed as a Ghazal, 'Ishq Ki Raat' still isn't disappointing as a love song by Sonu Nigam, Sunidhi Chauhan and Shreya Ghoshal.
After 'Dil Ki Baatein', another gross mishap happens with Vinod Rathod not getting the credit for 'Chura Liya'. And this time it is even worse as he is the only male singer in this duet with Shreya Ghoshal. But instead there is Babul Supriyo on the cover! A fine melodious love song, it is quite listenable in the end and is easy to the ears due to a predictable yet dependable tune by ARA.
Newcomer Tarranum sings the closing number 'Dilbar', that is a stage/item number picturised on Preeti. She does her best to join the league of the seductresses and also succeeds to an extent. The song too works well for the situation while Tarranum does make a fine debut. The lady deserves to be given more breaks on the musical front.
For a hyped movie with mega starcast and great production values, the score of 'Chaahat-Ek Nasha' would have been considered ordinary due to absence of anything being truly outstanding or extra-ordinary. But with a genre like this, low production cost and least hype surrounding the movie, anything good about the music of 'Chaahat - Ek Nasha' is an added bonus.
