  Music Reviews
By Joginder Tuteja, July 1, 2004 - 17:05 IST

After the surprise success of romantic musical 'Tujhe Meri Kasam' that shot Riteish Deshmukh and Genelia D'Souza to fame, Ushakiron movies present their next Hindi flick that is again designed as a youth musical. 'Thoda Tum Badlo Thoda Hum' is produced by Ramoji Rao, who is institution in himself down south, and directed by Esmayeel Shroff. TTBTH stars Arya Babbar in the lead role where he gets to play an educated city guy for the first time after playing a thief [and a Bhagat Singh disciple] in his debut venture 'Ab Ke Baras' and a rogue in 'Mudda'. Shreya Sharan makes her debut in Hindi films and the first thing that strikes on seeing her is her expressive face. Amar Mohile, who has started getting offers like 'Main Madhuri...', 'Ek Haseena Thi', and the recent 'Gayab' composes while Nida Fazli, Nitin Raikar and Ibrahim Ashk write.

After listening to the songs of TTBTH, one immediately starts thinking that why hasn't the music been promoted well? Why has there been such a sub-standard publicity so far that the movie gives an impression of being a B-Grade flick. The CD jacket says that the album had been packed half an year back and still it never made to the music stores at all. The songs too have followed a trend of being on the air for a couple of days and then off the air again for an entire week. While this review is being written, this writer witnesses a brand new song on the tube around midnight. This number too follows the same trend as the other songs promoted so far. The song comes in a flash and then ends abruptly - no continuation whatsoever.

Coming to the actual songs in the album. So well, they are not really bad at all. Producers of the movie may be really having some reasons known to them that they didn't pick at least three songs that could have been extensively promoted. 'No Tension' derives its root from the A.R.Rehman school of music in all senses, be it the rhythm, the acoustics or the vocals. KK is in his elements once again, music is hip-hop, rhythm is catchy, and choreography is vibrant while both the lead stars look comfortable with their dancing and expressions. This song could have been a popular number had it been promoted well!

Another track that has a mass appeal amongst the campus as well as the family crowds is Nida Fazli written 'Sun Re Peepal' by Sonu Nigam, Shreya Ghoshal, Vaishali Samant and Sadhana Sargam. Though the lyrics may not really catch the fancy of all the moviegoers as they are not very easy on lips, the credit should go to the composer Amar Mohile who has woven good music around these. He has integrated rhythm with melody pretty well that makes for a pleasant hearing. Another good effort that seems to go in vain as the number didn't even reach it's audience in a major way.

Title song 'Thoda Tum Badlo' has an identifiable Rehman touch in the beginning and makes for another above average track. Though the lyrics by Ibrahim Ashk are just about OK, both Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik infuse life in this mushy romantic track. The number is not one of the kinds that will make your heart skip a beat and make you long for your loved one, but still it is not a bad hearing either.

'Kalam Haath Mein Hai' by Nida Fazli is another lovey-dovey track that has mediocre music. The number has a ghazal feel around it but doesn't stand much of a chance in terms of mass appeal. A select few who love listening to soft music may go for this number but overall there is not much fizz around.

'Tauba Tauba' is a ched-chad song between a young couple and takes the album downhill. A kind of number that were usually picturized on the likes of an Akshay Kumar or an Ajay Devgan in the first half of the 90s, it has average lyrics by Ibrahim Askh and some ordinary singing by Udit Narayan and Shreya Ghoshal. The number is choreographed in a very routine vintage Bollywood style and is just very unexciting. No, the producers may definitely not have wanted to bank on this one!

Another average duet is 'Aanchal Hai Pawan' by Udit Narayan and Shreya Ghoshal that has predictable music but some good lyrics by Nida Fazli. A number that sounds seductive in it's approach, it is still better than usual crop of some downright boring tracks as heard in some recent music album releases.

In the end it is left to Asha Bhonsle ji who infuse life back again in this album that has it's share of ups and downs. 'Uff Youma' relies on rhythm once again, has nice beats and some good singing by Ashaji again [need we say that]. KK gives very good support while Nitin Raikar's lyrics are apt for the situation. A youthful song, will it be promoted on the air after the movie is off the theatres? Any other Bollywood producer may have grabbed the number with both hands, done a lavish choreography and flooded the channels with just this track!

TTBTH is a live example of some above fine effort going down the drain because of its limited reach to the public. All sympathies for Amar Mohile who has been working towards becoming an independent song composer for movies after being a successful background music composer. As mentioned above, there are at least a couple of songs that are worth hearing but probably would never be heard!
