  Music Reviews
By Joginder Tuteja, May 17, 2004 - 17:38 IST

If 2003 saw the overdose of movies with horror and shock genre, 2004 seems to be inclined towards passion and lust. 2004 seems to be enjoying a good run for movies with sex as a undercurrent theme after super hit 'Murder' and an average runner 'Hawas'. While 'Hawas' was still in the post production stages, director Karan Razdan soon started work on another movie with a hot theme - this time on a relationship between two girls. While this theme has been witnessed before in 'Fire' and to a very marginal extent in 'Moksha' (not many know that this Arjun Rampal - Manisha Koirala starrer did have a brief underplay of such relationship), 'Girlfriend' is the first mainstream commercial movie that brings this theme out of the closet and makes no bone about it. Produced by Pammi Baweja, 'Girlfriend' has music by Daboo Malik (who also composed for Karan Razdan's last release 'Hawas') while Praveen Bhardwaj writes the lyrics. Amrita Arora and Isha Kopikar play 'girlfriends' whereas Ashish Chaudhary (Qayamat, Shaadi Ka Laddoo) is the sole hero.

It is good to see that in a movie like 'Girlfriend' that focuses mainly on a girl-to-girl relationship, there are some nice melodious love songs that don't really make you turn the other way. Mostly all the songs are soft numbers, which though conventional, are still easy to ears and entertaining. Starting with a seductive number 'Thodi Tumse Shararat', it is quite a humable song, which sounds seductive only when seen on screen due to Isha's hot antics. Otherwise the way Shreya Ghoshal sings it, it comes across as an easygoing love song. Sonu Nigam is good as usual and the song gives a good start to the album. In the middle of the album, Sonu returns to sing the sad version of the number (as is so typical with the albums on T-Series). The sad version is just about passable and doesn't add much to the album, which anyways has other better songs.

Kumar Sanu reminds of his vintage form when he sings the solo 'Tere Chehre Se Nazar'. Though the lyrics are nothing new and the melody too is oft repeated, it turns out to be a good track due to its romantic nature. Shreya Ghoshal is efficient as well when she returns for a solo of this number. Overall the song may not be popular to such a great extent that people may throng the stores for just this one, but still in continuation with the mood of the album, it doesn't disappoint.

'Hamara Dil', written by Anwar Sagar, is from the Anu Malik school of music and is another good love song that should be publicized soon for better sales of the album. Probably that's the reason that the track is repeated twice in the album. But there is a puzzle that remains unanswered throughout the song. For some unknown reasons, whenever Abhijeet comes to the picture while singing this one, he suddenly croons some 'One Two Three Four', hence breaking the rhythm of the song completely. Sunidhi Chauhan sounds different while singing this track, as she is more subtle and soft in her approach this time around. Overall one of the better numbers of 'Girlfriend'.

'Suno To Jaana Jaana' is a hip-hop rhythmic song that is high on beats and is a sudden shift from the earlier three songs that focused on melody. Both Sunidhi Chauhan and Vaishali Samant are good while rendering this foot tapping number that has western arrangements.

'Bheegi Bheegi' is completely opposite and is a seductive number which is slow in theme but picks up momentum intermediately with both Shaan and Sowmya Raoh raising the tempo of the number after a couple of lines each. Daboo Malik makes his presence felt in the number by also narrating a line or two in the middle. A number that reminds of 'Zara Zara' from 'Rehna Hai Terre Dil Main' in terms of mood, rendition and theme of the track, now it all depends on the way this song is presented on the screen.

Overall the album turns out to be an above average fare mainly due to the melodious mood of the album created by Daboo Malik. This is definitely one of his finer efforts so far and should lead him to more projects that demand such music. Add to the fact that there were not many expectations from the album in the beginning; there is a pleasant surprise when the album is through.
