It's bonanza time for Big B lovers with Lakshya, Deewar and Dev lined up for release in June. And of his three releases, 'Dev' promises to be one movie, which rests firmly on the experienced shoulders of the mega-star. Whereas 'Lakshya' has a supporting role by Big B with Hrithik Roshan holding much of the spotlight and 'Deewaar' has him sharing the stage with Sanjay Dutt and Akshaye Khanna, 'Dev' has Amitabh Bachchan in the title role after a very long time. An Entertainment One & Applause presentation in association with Udbhav Dreamzone, 'Dev' is directed by Govind Nihalani (the man behind highly acclaimed 'Ardh Satya') co-starring Govind's favorite Om Puri and Amrish Puri. Fardeen Khan and Kareena Kapoor complete the rest of the star cast dominated by veterans. Aadesh Shrivastava, who has composed for two recent Bachchan starrers 'Baghban' and 'Deewaar', also composes for 'Dev' whereas Nida Fazli writes the lyrics.

There couldn't have been a better way to begin an album than with 'Rang Deeni', a superbly composed song that has a strong classical base and yet has been orchestrated with such elan that it will reach out to the masses in a big way. Extremely foot tapping due to it's rhythmic nature, it is a perfect showcase for talented Kailash Kher, who impressed one and all with last year's one of the best sung numbers - 'Allah Ke Bande' from 'Waisa Bhi Hota Hai - Part II'. Ably supported by Mahua Kamat and Shraddha Pandit, 'Rang Deeni' should be popular amongst both classes and masses after Nihalani's previous tryst with 'Rang' in 'Mujhe Rang De' from Thakshak!!

'Jab Nahin Aaye They Tum' is notable for more than one reason. Number one being Aadesh Shrivastava, who proves that given an ideal backing and a free hand, he can deliver goods and compose memorable music. 'Jab Nahin Aaye They Tum' is an apt example, where he displays his versatility as a composer who can compose such a soft romantic'n'melodious number that makes the lovey dovey hearts skip a beat. With near about zero instruments in the background, he manages to hold the attention of the listeners with this beautiful number written by Nida Fazli. Number two reason is Kareena Kapoor who gets behind the mike to render a full-blown love song. Admitted that she sings it far from perfection and 'Jab Nahin.. .' is definitely not going to be her stepping-stone to a parallel career. But the confidence she displays in her singing and her honest attempt at catching the nuances of the number at every corner is pretty visible. Vijeyta Pandit, an ex-starlet who used to dabble occasionally in singing too, renders the same number and does a better job. Her vocals are more clear and mature and at certain points do resemble Lataji's style as well. Nevertheless, both the versions hold on their own and entertain. Another small surprise is the rendering of poetry by Fardeen Khan at the beginning of the number, which is sweet and short. 'Jab Nahin...' is an experiment that pays mainly for the composition itself and the curiosity amongst the music lovers to listen to Kareena's singing, which is bound to increase with word of mouth.

Aadesh Shrivastava springs another surprise when he pairs up with Asha Bhonsle ji to sing 'Allahu'. No, this is not yet another Sufi track, which is so very typical in the Bollywood scene today or a qawalli. The fact is that it is another superbly arranged song that has Aadesh too, matching step by step with Ashaji's excellent singing. A longish love song that has variations throughout its length, it is a classy number that spells quality.

Apart from being the director and the photographer of the movie, Govind Nihalani's also picks up his writing pad for writing a number 'Tujh Sang Bandhi Dor'. And yes, this number is definitely going to turn out to be a remarkable landmark in Sonu Nigam's journey as a playback singer. One of the best tracks sung by Sonu Nigam in his decade old career, it brings to light another facet of his versatility - this time through a Hindustani classical track, for which everyone from the composer to the lyricist deserve a pat on the back. This number should silence all the detractors of Sonu Nigam who had labeled Sonu as a singer who just knew how to sing in one way!! A must number for the lovers of quality music!

Abhijeet sings an unconventional 'Mangalam Ganesham' that is in the praise of Lord Ganesha. Again a differently composed number rather than routine such tracks that has punches of 'Ganpatti Bappa Moriya', this will be liked by the followers of devotional music.

Grand finale of the album is reached through the vocals of Big B himself in 'Dev Speaks' where he narrates a few lines about the 'karm' and 'farz' of the police officers who fight till the end to reach the goals. Though the narration by Big B is expectedly good, it is Aadesh again who hogs the limelight due to the superb instrumental soon after the narration is through. A high voltage musical piece, it is at par with the anthems that are prevalent in Hollywood movies about people in uniform.

After 'Baghban', Aadesh Shrivastava proves once again that he has in him to be in the big league and give strong competition to the likes of Anu Malik and Nadeem Shravan. Never mind an occasional 'Deewaar' that didn't meet the expectations one had with a movie of such grandeur! 'Dev' more than compensates for it and should be an ideal choice for those who follow good music and want to hear something different from the routine crooning of 'pyaar', 'ishq' aur 'mohabbat'!
