  Music Reviews
By Joginder Tuteja, November 17, 2003 - 11:21 IST

About 2 years back there was a time when every other director in Bollywood wanted to tell the tale of Bhagat Singh – in his own way. This time it's the protector of society - The COP, who is on the hot seat. Gangaajal released a few weeks back and Khakee is soon to be released. Aan and Dev will take some more time to hit the marquee and in the mean time arrives 'Police Force - An Inside Story' which was earlier titled 'Vidroh' and was launched some months ago. In the making for a long time, 'Police Force' is produced by Kulbhushan Gupta and is directed by Dilip Shukla, a known editor who recently edited 'Khel'. Staring Akshay Kumar and Raveena Tandon is principal roles, Police Force has music by Anand Milind (who must have composed the music at the peak of their career as they are hardly around now) and lyrics by Sameer.

A dated product, the moviemakers have been trying their best to give a new look to the movie, starting with picturizing a hip-hop masala number on the ex-flames Akshay and Raveena. Professional to the core, both the artistes do not give an iota of impression of being uncomfortable in this song'n'dance sequence 'Rafta Rafta' and lend justice to this track. An already popular song, it is on the lines of vintage Anand Milind tunes that were composed in dozens for the likes of Govinda, Anil Kapoor, Akshay etc.

Follows next is the 'snoring-boring' love song by Sonu Nigam and Sadhna Sargam - 'Chehre Mein'. An unexciting and an utterly routine composition, it can be easily given a skip. You quickly turn on to the next in the list - ' Maina Kunwari'. Starting off ditto as 'Ole Ole' from 'Yeh Dillagi', Sameer is culprit here again for taking us to the age-old stories of 'tota-maina-pinjara' and stuff alike. We just HATE this one! Vinod Rathod and Poornima are definitely 'one down' in their career after singing this one.

'Aahi Re Mai', a seemingly item song, is credited to Shreya Ghoshal but surprisingly it sounds more as Poornima. Is it a goof-up here? Newcomers Satish-Ajay compose this item track for which lyrics are by Nafeis Alam. A song for the front-benchers, it may become popular for them if the song is picturised as raunchy as the composition itself. Immediately next is another item song - 'Chudiyan' by Richa Sharma which again is not a great number by any means.

Abhijeet and Alka Yagnik bring this album to an end with 'Dil Churaya Aapne'. A typical Bollywood love song, it is one of those routine Anand Milind compositions of the yesteryears when these kind of beats used to be popular. But in today's scenario they hardly excite! Music company Sa Re Ga Ma try to infuse some life to the prospects of Police Force by adding a 'Akshay Kumar Hits' album along with this. Sorry, but that too doesn't really help.

'The Inside Story' of the music of Police Force in just 3 words is 'It doesn't work'!
