There was a time in the late 70s and the 80s when the combine of producer Romu Sippy and director Raj Sippy gave continuous hits in Satte Pe Satta, Inkaar, Andar Bahar, Mahadev, Boxer and Thanedar. All these movies had one thing in common - they were all masala mix movies that played to the gallery and reaped dividends. Later on the movies directed by Raj Sippy somehow lost their sheen and though he directed numerous flicks, none of them clicked in a major way. After a brief sabbatical, he returns with a thriller 'Woh' that stars Priyanshu Chatterjee and introduces model Cleo Issacs. 'Jodi' of Anand Raaj Anand and Dev Kohli handle the music department.
'Uparwale Yeh Kya Hua' is a track where the protagonist is complaining to God about giving him all the trouble, pain and loneliness in life while being fair to everyone else. Though the lyrics by Dev Kohli are sad, the track is sung in a happy manner. Anand Raj Anand's music is of convenience and gets stuck in the 70s groove. The number is at best just about average and it is surprising to see it being placed at the beginning of the album itself. And the surprises just don't end here!
As if the track is one of the best ever to have hit the Bollywood musical scene, it is repeated not once or twice but exactly 4 times! Abhijeet croons it twice while ARA also strikes with vengeance twice. OK OK! So the composers will say that in the 4th version (after which the album also ends), the protagonist is actually thanking God rather than complaining. But then by that time how many will actually be interested in hearing to this one.
Regular confessions of love are done for the umpteenth time in a similar fashion in 'Zindagi Main Jod Doon Tere Naam Se'. While Udit Narayan and Sadhana Sargam barely go through the motions, one wonders that if the movie has been touted as a thriller and a murder mystery, would there actually be any place for such a routine romantic track?
Some interest is revived in the album once the track 'Maula Maula' by Udit Narayan begins. But once you hear the first line 'Maula Jugaad Mera Fit Ho Gaya, Aaj Mera Maamla Hit Ho Gaya', you just wonder which century are we living in? Such songs used to do well during the 90's but in today's time it is strictly questionable.
Hip-hop is back in the item song 'Meri Mehfil Ka Rang' by (who-else?) Sunidhi Chauhan. Jaanu, Laila, Gora-rang, Sona-ang, Jawaani-pe-guroor etc. etc. is some of the literature used in this track that just doesn't stand any chance apart from the front-benchers who may catch some fancy for this raunchy track. Ignore this!
If singing 'Uparwale' was not enough, ARA returns to sing a 'really bad' number 'Beimaani Ke Dhandhe Mein Imaandar Banda Hoon'. An obvious hangover of Kaante, Plan and some of the other Sanjay Dutt movies, this track is again about a feel-good don who gives justifications for his acts of crime and all his black money! But is anyone really interested in hearing an entire song on this story?
Music of 'Woh' is pretty much below average and doesn't have even one single track that may take this album to safety mark. A boring album to the core, it will be very difficult for the album to find any listeners.
