A Romantic Musical Thriller - this is how Gulshan Kumar and N.R. Pachisia production's Muskaan is described. Starring Aftab Shivdasani, Gracy Singh, Praveen Dabas and Anjala Jhaveri, this movie about Love, Life, Betrayal and Murder directed by the debutante duo of Rohit-Manish has music by Nikhil Vinay (in quick succession after Insaaf-The Justice') and lyrics by Sameer.
Nikhil Vinay's favorites Sonu Nigam and Anuradha Paudwal give a decent start to the album with a romantic 'Woh Ho Tum'. An average song, sad version of 'Woh Ho Tum' also appears as a full length track and succeeds in doing what it intends to - depress you! Sonu Nigam is dull and disappoints in the sad version though he is fine in the original love track.
Soon follows 'Jis Din Teri Meri Baat Nahi Hoti' by the pair of Udit Narayan and Anuradha Paudwal. A track about 'If I don't meet you then mera din nahi guzarta and raat nahi hoti' and stuff alike, you can make out from the lyrical value that what would the entire song in totality hold for you. A drag track about a couple in love!
'Yaad Aaye' - is a good track belonging to the 'dard-e-judaii' genre and seems to be a product of one of the musical non-film albums of Adnan Sami. Use of tabla throughout the track is a highlight.
'Kabhi Jaage Soye' is yet another feel good song composed by Nikhil Vinay and belongs typically to the house of T-Series. Nothing original about it, nothing experimental and nothing too great but still, it works - though, just for the duration for which it is played. Lyrics by Sameer are predictable, to say the least but then one can't forget that he is the same guy who had the maximum musical hits to his credit in 2003!
'Nami Danam' is some strange 'disco' type track that neither makes any sense nor does strike any chord whatsoever. Vocals of Alka Yagnik and especially Shaan seem to be totally out-of-focus and leave no mark at all. A complete mood spoiler!
The way 'Nach Panjaban Nachle' (Sonu Nigam and Anuradha Paudwal) starts is like someone is trying to hammer one's way through a wall in your house. So loud and unmelodious is the beginning that it catches you unaware. And then the main line arrives as a rehashed version of Rajesh Roshan's tune 'Dil Deewana Na Jaane Kab Kho Gaya' in 'Daag – The Fire'. After the same tune was repeated by Nadeem Shravan in 'Pehi Pehli Baar Mohabbat Ki Hai' (Sirf Tum), Nikhil Vinay too play their part in using the same tune for 'Nach Panjaban'. And one wonders that in first place, is it such a great tune after all that it is repeated now and then? Yes, one thing common in all the three soundtracks has been that they all have been released by the same music company - T-Series. Some coincidence this one!
Sonu Nigam and Anuradha Paudwal make inroads once again in the territory of 'dard-e-dil' with 'Ishq Hasata Hai Ishq Rulata Hai'. Listening to this weepy track makes one wonder whether the same music bank is in force once again from where T-Series had met success earlier in 'Lal Dupatta Malmal Ka', 'Aayee Milan Ki Raat' and more of the same clan. Nothing new or too great about this number, it takes you at least a decade back. Sameer too is at his simplistic best!
Most reliable duet pair of Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik make a belated appearance at the very end of the album in 'Jaaneman Chupke Chupke'. Better of the entire lot, it has that T-Series - Nikhil Vinay combine in full force with snow peaked alps in Canada/Switzerland, top angle shots with a 360 degree moving camera, typical Indian melody, chiffon saris, subtle dance steps and the works! A pleasant song to watch, it does well for the moment.
All the tracks in Muskaan are a rehashed version of some already heard tunes that do not impress much. Repetitive tunes, heard before lyrics, seen before locations and lack of novelty and freshness in about everything in the music of Muskaan, doesn't create a very good picture overall.
Just about average!
