We have heard of the most in-demand actors, the most
sought after actresses
and even the most wanted music directors. But once in
a few years does an
instance occur when a newcomer director elevates to a
hotshot status.
And that too when his claim to fame is through a
chotisi film by the name
of 'Chandni Bar'. Yes, we are talking about the
hottest kid on the block-
Madhur Bhandarkar an erstwhile assistant of Ram Gopal
Varma.
Madhur, who
started his career with not-so-happening Trishakti
with youngsters like
Milind Gunaji and Arshad Warsi hit back with low
budget Chandni Bar which
was a runaway success primarily due to its hard
hitting realistic portrayl
of bar girls. Whereas Chandni Bar was a no-songs
affair, Madhur Bhandarkar
gets a bit more commercial with Satta-The Game of
Power. This again deals
with the topical issue-Politics. Raveena Tandon plays
the central
character in S-TGOP which is produced by the same guys
who came up with Dil
Vil Pyar Vyar - Metalight Productions Pvt Ltd. Javed
Akhtar writes while
Raju Singh, who delivered some fairly good composition
for 'Paagalpan' last
year gives the music.
Well, if there is one song that can match up with
Ashaji's songs in Ijazat,
then it has to be 'Gungunati Hai'. An excellent
composition in totality, it
has Ashaji in vintage touch and one wonders for the
nth time that for how
long can this lady keep continuing with her good form
which has been
consistent for ages now. Javed Saab's poetry is one of
his best and Raju
Singh deserves a pat on his back for his effort that
should certainly get
him an entry point into the Bollywood circle. A
collector's delight, this
number itself can prove to be the USP of S-TGOP score.
Normally when a song
is offered to someone for another version, then they
generally fail to rise
to occasion But here sonu Nigam, singing the male
version of 'Gungunati
Hai' makes the best use of this opportunity and sings
in surprisingly
subdued manner. In initial hearings, one has to really
stress to believe
that it is indeed Sonu rendering the number as he
sounds so different.
'Jab Dil Mile' by Shaan and Madhushree begins where
'Gungunati Hai' ends - Literally.
The track starts with a small musical piece of
'Gungunati Hai'
and then 'Jab Dil Mile' takes over. A melodious tune
again, it just warms
the heart with its innocence. Though the number may
not reach the chart-toppers,
it is a good number to be heard in continuity to the
mood of both the tracks.'Masti Masti '
by Shankar Mahadevan with backing vocals by Clinton
and
Vivienne Pocha is a situational disc track that has
the overtones of
'Hindustani' by Shankar from late Mukul S Anand's
stalled project 'DUS'.
An OK track, it may be required to move the story
forward. At max, it may be popular
among disc-goers - THAT'S ALL.
A slight disappointment arrives in the shape of 'More
Saiyan Kotwal' by
Ashaji again. A song designed JUST for the front
gentry, it is purely a
situational item track. Possibly a mujra song or one
in the villain's den or a
politician's party, it gets a bit down market and just
doesn't go anywhere.Redemption
comes as 'Jeevan Path' by Shubha Mudgal who sings the
song with
a lot of conviction. A song that may possibly be
placed in the background
score of the entire movie due to its philosophical
nature and when it comes
to just sitting and hearing it. Heavy duty nature of
the number and snail
like pace of the track may prove to be deterrent in
marketing S-TGOP for
this very number.
But all said and done, S-TGOP can be bought for
'Gungunati Hai' that can be
considered to be one of the better songs of the year
that has gone by.
Madhur's direction and Raveena's performance should
also be something to be
watched out for.
