OK! So is not just Ram Gopal Verma's 'Factory', which is churning out movies month after month. iDream Productions too mean serious business with 'Mitr', '16 December', 'Bollywood Hollywood' and 'J2M2' in quick succession and that too with varied themes. Now they come up with a thriller cop drama with a twist. And you may ask that what this twist is? Well, when we have so many male dominant cop dramas coming one after another with Gangaajal, Khakee, Aan and Garv/Satyamev Jayate, then why should women be far behind? So what Robby Grewal, the debutante director (a quick question - "How many directors did we actually see in 2003 who were NOT debutante?") does is replace his male protagonist as a cop with the female one instead and ropes in Sushmita Sen, who will be having a release after more than a year (her last release was Aankhen). A female-centric movie also starring slow and steady Sushant Singh (Jungle, Kaun, Legend Of Bhagat Singh, 16 December, Darna Mana Hai), Samay is a thriller that carries an interesting tagline - When Time Strikes! Initial promos of the movie have been unique and stylish and built up some expectations. Hope the movie lives up to them! Sandeep Chowta composes for this album and Abbas Tyrewala writes which is more of an instrumental rather than song and dance routine.
Samay, that doesn't have a romantic lead as such (due to the theme of the movie) and hence a love song, starts with, what else, but an item number. Needless to say, 'Laila Laila' by Sowmya Raoh, is a foot-tapping track well composed by Sandeep Chowta. Choreographed on a newcomer, she looks good and gyrates equally well, reminding of Yana Gupta's western act in 'Babuji' from Dum. Does the dress too seem familiar? Blame it on the inspirations?
'Aaj Ki Raat' is a pop track by Sneha Pant and composed by DJ Na'ryan Beck and Jayanta Pathak. A racy track, as soon as you hear it you start wondering whether it is theme-wise similar to yesteryears 'Jab Andhera Hota Hai' from the Rajesh Khanna starrer 'Raja Rani'. And to your pleasant surprise you hear the remixed version of the same track 'Jab Andhera Hota Hai' by Vaishali Samant. Now you start wondering something else - "What is a pop track, which has been remixed by DJ Notorious and Amit Das, and has been on tube for months now is doing in this movie soundtrack? Is it a part of the movie or just a way to promote the movie album?"
OK! So enough of wondering thoughts! Let's concentrate to the other track 'Zindagi' which is original and sung by Sowmya Raoh. A well-composed love song, it is rendered excellently by Sowmya, who is very good as always. A slow number sung in slow pitch, it has that typical Sandeep Chowta stamp. 'Losing To Win' appears as the 'Zindagi Reprise' which is a slow version of this number.
Rest of the album is mainly instrumental, which is probably the most difficult part to be composed in a movie. Starting with 'Samay - The Theme' to 'Man Hunt', 'The Chase' and 'Last Clue', they are mainly a journey of a protagonist conveyed through varied emotions by means of different music at different times. Good in their own way, they become a bit loud at times (probably that's what the theme demands) due to aggressive use of tabla. Nevertheless, these tracks may appeal mainly to the class rather than a simple man who may buy this album for some complete 'paisa vasool'.
'Samay' has certainly not been designed as a musical and neither are there any full-fledged songs in this movie, which has just one item number - 'Laila Laila' to boast of. This is the reason why the album has mainly instrumentals and some borrowed numbers in the shape of 'Aaj Ki Raat' and 'Jab Andhera'. So, in the end, maybe there is something for someone out there but in totality the album just doesn't appeal massively to an average music lover.
Avoidable.
