‘Love Thy Neighbour’ says the caption for Nayee Padosan. Rumored to be a remake of Sunil Dutt, Mahmood, Saira Banu starrer laugh riot Padosan. Nayee Padosan stars mainly newcomers – Vikas Kalantri (who was the lead hero in KC Bokadia’s lesser known flick Pyaar Zindagi Hai, Anuj Sawhney, Aslam Khan and the ‘Nayee Padsoan’ i.e. Mahek. The only known face is Rahul Bhatt of Henna fame who also stars as the lead hero in dismal Yeh Mohabbat Hai. He apparently plays the character that was immortalized by Mahmood in Padosan. Produced by Nitin Manmohan who gave one of the very few movies that survived the patchy 2002 – Deewangee, has made this movie in a short time that is directed by successful choreographer turned debutant director – B. H. Tharunkumar. Music is composed by Shankar Ehsaan Loy and Sameer, who is probably writing for more than 50% of the film albums that have relea sed in past 6 months, is the lyricist.

Title song that begins with the words ‘Sari Sari Raina’ has a typical SEL feel about an Indian melody with a western touch. Sung by now established Shaan and fast emerging singing talent Shweta Pandit, this track about a guy singing praises about his ‘new female neighbour’ should turn out to be a crowd pulling number. Sets, costumes and choreography of this number should be added plus points.

‘Mera Mann’ is a very sweet and beautiful song about a girl fantasizing about her guy–to–be. Sung very well by Mahalaxmi Iyer, it is extremely pleasing to the ears, mainly because of minimal instruments in the background in which the focus lies primarily on vocals.

After this melody, the mood is shifted to pop with ‘Chor Nahin Kee Hain’. Shankar and Mahalaxmi Iyer sing this track with ?n. Though the lyrics are pretty ordinary, in fact quite predictable, the peppy’n’pretty arrangement by the music director trio more than make up for it. To add to the fun, the immediate track is a fusion of western and Indian classic.

‘Rang De Rang De’ is a holi number (after some long-long time) sung by Shaan , Babul Supriyo and Mahalaxmi Iyer. A colourful number, it does entertain while it lasts. After all this pop, masti and rang-se-bharpoor tracks comes a soft number – ‘Dil Mein, Dhadkan Mein’ sung by Shankar, Shaan and Balraam though rendered well, it isn’t very catchy. It may take some time to really pick up.

After an overall good listening, Nayee Padosan ends on a rather unimpressive note with ‘Ek Baichanee’ which is somewhat a dull number. It falls flat due to some disinterested composition and vocals by Shankar, Vijay Prakash and Neha Rajpal.

Though only for a while, in totality ‘Nayee Padosan’ does entertain.

An above average album.
