'The magical love story of a 32 year old virgin' - Mumbai Matinee. Yes ladies and gentlemen - Sex in Bollywood is slowly but steadily
trying to peep it's way out of the closet. Starring Rahul Bose, Anusha, Asrani Kabir, Saurabh Shukla and Vijay Raaz, this follows the
footsteps of Snip, Joggers's Park, OOPS and BOOM in terms of crossover treatment. Directed by Anant Balani, who already has his
Jogger's Park ready for release, it is presented by Pritish Nandy Communications who have earlier come up with Kaante (HIT), Sur
(flop) and Jhankaar Beats (above average). MM has music by debutant Farhad Wadia and Anand Raj Anand (who composes just one
song but surprisingly gets a higher billing than Farhad on the album cover !!)
This is may be not without a reason because Anand Raj Anand composes the most catchy (and commercialy viable !!) number - 'Loot
Gaye'. Sung by newcomer Saswati, it is a definite item number written by Dev Kohli. A number about 'How I am lost in your love', it
should be popular from day one due to it's catchy rhythm. After this number it is Farhad all the way, who overdoes a little with his 'Tu'.
Though the number is good to hear, it appears in three versions - main version, English (as You) and then in the sad hindi version !! A
typical love number composed as a slow pop track (sung by Kunal Ganjawala - Hindi and Shaan - English), it is good but doesn't cast
a lasting impression for a person to hear it again and again. Yes, the lyrics by Milap Jhaveri (Hindi) and Farhad (English) do deserve a
mention !!
Going by the trend of remixes in today's music scene, you expect a lot from the remix version of 'Bumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost' from
Vinod Khanna's Aap Ki Khatir !!! Sung by Abbey and Sukhreen, remixed by DJ Na'ryan and programmed-produced by Jatin Sharma it
misses in making a mark and doesn't do much good. Not impressive !! An ode to a city called Mumbai/Bombay/Bambai - 'Yeh Hai
Mumbai' sung by Sonu Nigam, it is about people and life at Mumbai. Movie title - 'Mumbai Matinee' is sung at the end of the number
and this is the only reference to the title in the entire album. A fast pacy track, it is average.
But the real fun lies in the two remarkably different, daring, innovative and gutsy tracks - 'Shame' and 'Sex is Good'. Both of these are
are English tracks and talk straight to the point - SEX !! 'Shame' is about the internal mental conflict going around in the movie's lead's
(Rahul Bose) mind who is made to feel guilty about his desire for making love to someone. Narrated in a comical fashion, though the
lyrics of the song may come a bit of a shock for the conservative audience, they have to be a heard to be enjoyed. Designed as a
Hollywood track, it is sung excellently by Joe Alvares and the fellow chorus members. 'Sex Is Good' sung by KK and Farhad is about
whether making love should be in less, in control or unlimited !! Our protagonist thinks otherwise - he wants it all the time !! And this is
what the number is all about. Again a number for restricted audience.
Music of 'Mumbai Matinee' breaks most of the rules of Bollywood (apart from a mandatory item number - Loot Gaye, which is good
anyway) and makes a serious attempt at being different (you can ignore 'Tu'). Since the market for such films and music is just
opening, it may take some time for the sales to pick up but word of mouth publicity will definitely help !!
