Decades back there came films like Bazaar and Mandi that dealt with the topical issue - flesh trade !! The issue came to the front pages again with 'Chandni Bar' that got Tabu all the recognition and fame that an actor of her caliber truly deserves. Now, a couple of years later, comes another film, though in a more commercial mode, that deals with the same issue - "Where everything is for sale" - Market. Starring Manisha Koirala, Suman Ranganathan and Sweta Menon, this flick directed by Jaiprakash, also doubles up as a launch vehicle of hot ramp star and model - Aryan Vaid, though there is a doubt whether this women oriented flick is the ideal debut for him !! Produced by Rama Adhikari and Atif Khan, Market has music by Altaf Raja !! (yes, you have read it right !!) and lyrics by Arun Bhairav. Ranjeet Barot is the arranger.
The music channels are busy airing the chalu numbers - 'Meri Gali Mein Tera Aana' and 'Khalliwalli', but more about that later as the real surprise is 'Hum Pyaar Jo Tera Paayenge'. Though not a path-breaking number, it certainly is a way above mark for a Altaf Raja composition !! A soulful melody, it is a soft romantic number by Kumar Sanu and Alka Yagnik that also appears as a solo by Kumar Sanu. A number that threatens to invade the territory of Nadeem Shravan and Anu Malik, it is pretty listenable and one of the few good numbers in the album.
The movie, as the promos suggest, is in no way aimed at the class and mass alike !! Designed mainly for a restricted genre of filmgoers, it has not one, not two but three front bench numbers - 'Meri Gali Mein Tera Aana', 'Khalliwalli' and 'Aaj To Madhur Milan Hoga' !! The last number ' Aaj To...' , composed by Vaishno Deva, is particularly surprising to hear as it is rendered by Alka Yagnik. A number about the great times ahead after marriage, it could have been strictly avoided by Alka Yagnik. 'Meri Gali' and 'Khalliwalli' are the bar dance numbers that are not great compositions by any means. Purely masala item numbers, they may be liked by the moviegoers who are looking for some sizzling tracks, but the shelf life of the numbers is nothing beyond that !! ' Meri Gali' is sung as solos by both Altaf (again a surprise !!) and Sunidhi Chauhan, and though the latter is at least tolerable, the former version by Altaf Raja just sucks !! Same holds true for the Khalliwalli (composed by Jani Babu and written by Khurshid Hallauri) in which Hema Sardesai and Sunidhi Chauhan sing a duet whereas Altaf Raja does the solo act !!
And if there is Altaf Raja then there has to be a dard-e-judaai song as this is the least his fans expect from him !! So here we have, Altaf Raja making a grand 'bayaan' of his 'toota-hua-dil', in 'Mere Toote Hue Dil Ko Sahara Kaun Dega?' An average number, as like the rest of the numbers, it just plays to the gallery and doesn't boast of anything superb !! Altaf, you had a much better composition in 'Tumse Kitna Pyaar Hai' in 'Company' !!
The album doesn't have much for the ones looking out for some good romantic score or a genuinely different soundtrack !! Neither does it fall in the category of something 'different' !!
In all, a few sizzling/item/chalu numbers, classify this album as the one for a fixed 'Market' !!
