'A musical by Nadeem Shravan' - this is how the publicity of Indian Babu is in progress currently. UK-based Surjit S. Pandher joins with director/cinematographer Lawrence D'Souza to produce his maiden venture titled Indian Babu. The film has been shot extensively in India and London and introduces a new romantic pair of Jaz Pandher and Gurline Chopra (recently crowned Miss Chandigarh). Lot is on stake especially on D'Souza as he hadn't had a single success after the dream run of Saajan. After a long hiatus, he tries to make a comeback. Movie will be hitting the screen after some time but let us see how does the music of Indian Babu go for which Sameer has written the lyrics and Nadeem Shravan have composed.
Indian Babu is an album well begun with a nostalgic Nadeem Shravan score - 'Dil Mera Dil Mera Dil' by Kumar Sanu. Very much on the lines of 'Dil Jigar Nazar Kya Hai' from D'Souza earlier directorial venture Dil Ka Kya Kasoor, it has a good rhythm and is presented well. Choreography is impressive as well. 'Rabba Rabba' is a mandatory punjabi bhangra track with a bit of rap thrown in. Sung by Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik and Kunal Ganjawala, it is very very typical and just about OK. There have been far better tracks of such kinds in recent times.
Romantic duet 'Aap Humse Pyaar Karne Lage Hain' is average again and is one amongst the crowd of mushy number. One cannot really claim that this number may become a chart-buster as it has nothing great to offer. Both Kumar Sanu and Alka Yagnik just sleepwalk through the lines provided to them. Another duet sung by them is the garba 'Mere Sang Sang Naach Sajana'. A track without any fizzle, it doens't make one tap his feet at all to the beats. Chalo, so we had a punjabi track and a garba, now let's think about some music lovers from Goa also and compose a 'I wanna take you higher'. A track with a mood of Goa and some Calypso beats, it is at most passable, mainly because of KK's singing. But what exactly is meant by 'I wanna take you higher', ask Mr. Sameer !!!
Let's get into a shaadi-baraati mood now and sing along with 'Aaya Dulha Aaya'. Kumar Sanu sounds nasal while Sarika Kapoor and Nirja Pandit just seem to go through the motions. Again, a lifeless number without any credentials whatsoever, it has no repeat value. 'Hum Deewaane Hai Tere' is a qawalli by Sabri Brothers and Jaspinder Narula and is repeated twice. Reminiscent of 'hazaaron' qawallis heard earlier, it is just the same, but still can be listened to.
Basic concept of Indian Babu has to be appreciated. They tried to have as much as variety possible with a bhangra track, a walli, a garba, a love song etc etc. But in an attempt to be truly cosmopolitan, Nadeem Shravan have just failed miserably. An unexpected weak and a spineless score from them. 100% avoidable.
