  Music Reviews
By Joginder Tuteja, July 28, 2003 - 13:38 IST

Those who have seen 'Style' - a campus comedy released about a year back, would not have forgotten the adventures of Chantu and Bantu played by Sahil Khan and Sharmaan Joshi !! Well, the sequel (which is a rarity in Bollywood) of the same is ready for release by the name - 'Xcuse Me' based on the most popular number of the original !! Produced and directed by N.Chandra, the man behind the original, Xcuse Me has practically the same team of actors Sahil Khan and Sharmaan Joshi and the music composers Sanjeev Darshan. This time around, the heroines are Jaya Seal (Chhal) and Sonali Joshi.

Everyone remembers that the music in the original was a riot and was pretty popular, especially with the youngsters. Can the same be said about the sequel? Read on !!

Promos have already begun and they carry on very well with where Style left !! Fun, pranks, laughter - they have it all. The song that is being aired - 'Ishq Hua' too has been shot well and gels well with the movie. Shaan is as usual whereas Shreya Goshal (who seems to be going the Sunidhi Chauhan way) gets to sing her probably first rock'n'roll number !! A number that may not have immense shelf value for your grand children to hum, it plays to the gallery and kick starts the album well !! It is also repeated in the album but this time with Udit Narayan instead of Shaan in the lead !!

We think of Sunidhi and she strikes back with 'Ye Tu Kya Kar Rahela Hai' - a tapori number in duet with Abhijeet. The number resembles 'Excuse Me...kya re' from Style in terms of content and the lyrics by Abbas Katka too do not try to be path breaking at all !! A pure masala mix, it is a number that may fetch some 'taalis' and 'seetis' if picturised well (in the league of other tapori numbers). But warning - it is again a number for a restriced audience !!

'Boom Boom' sung by the composers Sanjeev Darshan themselves is again a campus number but is a bit of assault on the ears due to it's being loud. Supposed to be as fun track (going with the theme of the movie as a campus flick), it is not too impressive and one wishes to give it a skip !! 'Ladki Ladki' is again one of those

'barely passable' numbers and is shrieky !! The lead heroes here are shown to be desperate in just getting a girl irrespective of what her cast, creed, color, religion or anything else is !! Abhijeet and Shaan are just not good enough (surprsingly) and one starts getting a bit of boredom setting here !!

Finally comes the title track that begins with a perfect impersonation of Ricky Martin's 'Un dos tres' as 'Excuse Me'. Just sing it the same way and you will realize that how this has been made possible. But if you want to buy the album just to know how this been done then the choice is yours .. !!! Sung by Hema Sardesai, it is about the girl who is not apologetic about the attention she gets due to her oomph and loves to flaunt it !! That's it !!

Music of 'Xcuse Me' just doesn't pick up at all. Though the score has been designed as funky, is becomes a bit routine after some time and there is nothing to talk about originality. Now it is all left to the choreographer and the director as to how do they visualize the numbers and present it in the way that audience start loving them !!

Yes, there is one consolation for Sanjeev Darshan. At least 'Xcuse Me' has marginally better compositions then their last flick Parwaana !!
