  Music Reviews
By Joginder Tuteja, May 16, 2003 - 15:11 IST

Shah Rukh Khan, Jatin-Lalit, Javed Aktar and Aziz Mirza - the team has never gone wrong when it comes to music of their films. Addition to the porty is Aadesh Srivastava and what we get is the third venture from Dreamz Unlimited after Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani - a satire on commercialization of society and Asoka - a historical. Both the movies had their fair share of merit but couldn't do much at the box-office. With Chalte Chalte, the producer trio of Khan, Mirza and Juhi Chawla, in association with UTV Productions, play safe and come up with a romantic feel good flick !! A lover boy role has always paid for SRK - DDLJ, KKHH, DTPH and Mohabbatein being case in point. But his role in Chalte Chalte (CC) is diametrically opposite to his role in DTPH. Whereas in DTPH he played a guy who doesn't believe in love and the concept of two people living together for an entire life after marriage, in CC it is his character who is tooooo.... mushy at heart, tooooo....romantic and toooo....moony eyed. Whereas the girl he wooes and gets married to - Rani Mukherjee - is the opposite who is much more level headed (though being fairly romantic at heart) and much more practical. And the situations that arise due to such conflicting personalities forms the crux of the storyline of CC !!

Coming to music of CC, it has 4 tracks by Aadesh Srivastava and 3 by Jatin Lalit. And this has to be agreed that both Aadesh and musician duo of Jatin Lalit deliver music that goes with the mood of the movies rather than doing something to prove their supremacy over the other. Music conveys their individual styles and still manages to gel well with the overall narrative of the movie. Examples being 'Tauba Tumhaare Yeh Ishaare' and ' Suno Na Suno Na'. Both the tracks are extrememly melodious, very well composed - - - and they are distinct compositions by Jatin Lalit (Tauba) and Aadesh (Suno Na). Common factor is Abhijeet who has always sung award winning numbers for SRK.(Badi Mushkil Hai - Anjaam, Chaand Taare - Yes Boss among many others !!) He pairs with Alka Yagnik and sings heart warming 'Tauba' that has beautiful lyrics by still young-at-heart Javed Akhatar saab !!! A hit number already, it is well complemented by Aadesh's 'Suno Na' which is a solo by Abhijeet. An even better track, it has a very sweet picturisation, especially the sequence where Khan (who has shed a lot of weight and looks pretty slim !!) holds a large size stuffed toy like a school going child and wooes his lady love !! Rani looks stunning in the promos with her revamped dressline, free flowing hair, newly acquired contact lenses and of course - HER CHARM !!

Title track 'Chalte Chalte' by Jatin Lalit is again so pleasant to hear to that you don't actually realise that it is a SAD song about a couple who are introspecting about why their relationship is going on a downslide !! Again an effortless duet by Abhijeet and Alka Yagnik, it's instrumental also features in the album and is quite impressive. There are two numbers sung by Sukhwinder Singh and composed by Aadesh - 'Layi Vi Na Gayi' and 'Tujh Par Gagan Se'. Former is based on a Punjabi folk tune and is written by Pappy Dhillon and Babu Mann, whereas the latter is a fast paced number in the mould of 'Dil Nasheen Har Ada' picturised on Jackie Shroff and Sushmita Sen in 'Bas Itna Sa Khwab Hai'. Both the tracks are very much situational and hold much more relevance when seen with the movie !!

'Ghum Shuda' is another example of a how a good product makes it's presence felt. An 'A' class number, it is deemed to be popular from Day - 1, once it's promo releases !! A track by Sonu Nigam, it is about a guy who has just met a girl, is madly in love with her and is frantically in search for her. It has an exciting tune and will be quite liked by the Khan's fans. A good one. 'Dagariya Chalo' by Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik and composed by Jatin Lalit is a fun track and composed in 'shudhh hindustani' style. A number about the spread of message of love and affection, it is one of those feel good ones that grows on you.

To sum it up, Chalte Chalte is a romantic album that should go well with both class as well as mass. Industry has been waiting with bated breath for an album that may bring the music industry out of the dumps it is presently in. Chalte Chalte can't guarantee to do so single handedly but a few more albums like this would certainly help the cause !!
