  Music Reviews
By Joginder Tuteja, April 4, 2003 - 14:24 IST

Another Indian lady director takes a bow after Mira Nair, Deepa Mehta and Tanuja Chandra. The name is Honey Irani. A name which is not new to bollywood as she has been immensely popular scriptwriter for many flicks in past few years. For her debut venture – Armaan, a story revolving around the life of doctors, she ropes in a talented team that comprises of ex-hubby Javed Akhtar as the dialogue writer and lyricist, Shankar Ehsaan loy as the music composers and Dinesh Gandhi as the producer. Add to this a starcast that boasts of Amitabh Bachchan, Anil Kapoor, Preity Zinta, Randhir Kapoor and Gracy Singh, and you are confident that half the battle is already won.

Armaan begins well with an Arabian nights kinda number - Mere Dil Ka Tumse Hai Kehna, rendered excellently by Chitra, conveying the sensual overtures of Preity Zinta. Her newly acquired hair style (or is it wig?) does catch immediate attention in this number. From this romantic track, the mood suddenly shifts to a more serious ‘n’ sober mood with Roop Kumar Rathod sung ‘Tu hi Bata zindagi’ A sad track, it is very well orchestrated. A situational track, it makes a good listening after repeated hearings. Last year’s Filmfare award winner for the best playback singer and R D Burman award holder Shreya Ghosal, too sings this number and her talent is a revelation again.

‘Aao Milke Gayen Aisa Gaan’ is a fun, dance and masti track set in the vibrant mood of Goa. This track sung by Udit Narayan, Mahalaxmi Iyer, Shankar Mahadevan and Big B himself reminds of another Bachchan track ‘Bachke Rehna Re Baba" from Pukar composed two decades back. A good track this one!!

Between ‘Aao Milke Gaayen’ and ‘Main Gaaon Tum Gao’ are a few dialogues about winning and losing in life by Big B himself. Main Gaaon tum Gao is sung with ample joy by Udit Narayan, Mahalaxmi Iyer ( she is into many prestigious projects these days), Shaan and newcomer Bhairavi Kumble. A fun track again, should be pretty impressive if choreographed well and filled with right colours.

An instrumental ‘jugalbandi’ makes an appearance as an experiment. A fusion of classical and western with violin as main instrument, it should be a part of the background score of the movie. A good track for the fusion lovers, which may not really appeal to the masses. ‘Jaane Yeh Kya Ho Gaya’ by Shankar Mahadevan and Alka Yagnik is a romantic duet. An above – average track, the lyrics by Javed Akhtar make it special. Again, like most of the other numbers of Armaan, it takes some time to settle down but thereon is impressive.

‘Meri Zindagi Mein Aaye Ho’ by Sonu Nigam and Sunidhi Chauhan is a sweet ‘n’ simple song about togetherness bringing back the aroma of the 60’s. Smooth flow of the number makes it immediately catchy. A good track which is very soothing to the ears.

Shankar Ehsaan Loy do it very right this time around. They have delivered an ‘A’ Class product which has though been composed keeping the elite in mind, still strikes a chord with everyone alike. Music of Armaan does take some time to get on you, but eventually becomes pretty likeable.
