The old man of Saraansh has come a long way. After
enacting every role - be a villain, a comedian, a
character artist and many others, Anupam Kher dons
the role of a director with Om Jai Jagadish. He makes his
directorial debut in this Vashu Bhagnani flick whose
midas touch has deceived him for a change with the
failure of Deewanapan and a very average response to Rehna Hai Terre Dil
Mein. OJJ has had it's share of controversies attached
to it with the heroines being in and out of the
project - noticeable
being Diya Mirza who was launched with successive
RHTDM and Deewanapan. Waheeda-ji plays the role of
head of family as Saraswati. She faces the camera
after a long
hiatus of 11 years. Her last film was her playing
memorable 'dayi-ja' in Lamhe. Incidentally Lamhe had
both Anil Kapoor and Anupam Kher as well. Om is played
by Anil Kapoor who is doing roles in movies as diverse as
Nayak, Badhai Ho Badhai and now OJJ. Fardeen Khan
plays Jai and Abhishek Bachchan is Jagadish. Both of
them desperately need a hit and maybe this is one flick
that may well prove to be turning point of their
career.
OJJ is perhaps Vashu Bhagnani's first foray into
family drama. Before this he has mainly produced light
entertainers or comedies. This is the reason why
earlier movies of
Vashu Bhagnani primarily comprised on peppy numbers
whereas OJJ has its own share of family numbers (Title
song and Happy Days) and a philosophical song (Jeena
Kya) by. Yes, there are youthful romantic numbers too
like Chori Chori, Shaadi and Love Story too. Music is
by Anu Malik and Sameer writes.
There are two numbers that are clearly inspired from
K3G - the title song and Happy Days. As one can make
out from the title itself, the song 'Om Jai Jagadish'
is a family
number which has the same shades as 'Meri Sanson Mein
Tu Hai Samaya'. It too speaks about family values and
how it is so great to be living as one happy family.
Abhijeet, Hariharan, Kay Kay and Alka Yagnik render
this number that has chants of timeless 'Om Jai
Jagadish Hare'. The number is repeated as version 2
and also features as theme music. (At this moment it starts becoming
something too much) Another number that is replica of
'Bole Chudiyan' in terms of concept, sets, costumes
and choreography is 'Chudi Baji Hi Haathon Mein' (Happy
Days) by Sonu Nigam, Alka Yagnik and Udit Narayan. It
is an enjoyable number but then the 'heard-before'
feeling damps the effect a bit.
But the ones that really liven up the show are Chori
Chori, Shaadi and Love Story especially Love Story
which is 'somewhat' an original composition. The echo
effect throughout the number makes for a mind-boggling effect
and it has to be heard in the theatres to be enjoyed
most. Abhijeet, Kavita Krishnamurthy and (especially
Shaan) make the best out of the opportunity and deliver a
very melodious number. Special marks to Sameer too for
writing beautiful lyrics.
A romantic number sung by Sonu Nigam and Alka Yagnik,
Chori Chori is from Anu Malik domain and is again
quite hummable. Malik saab just changes the
arrangements from his earlier hits here and there and wow! the
product is ready !!! 'Shaadi' is another winner, which
has the stamp of a Vashu Bhagnani number. This is one
track where you can say that you are hearing a song from a flick
produced by him. Sung by Shaan and in inimitable style
of Hema Sardesai, it is a fast peppy number where both
the guy and girl in love are expressing their desire to
marry each other soon.
Pyar Ka Matlab is one number that doesn't impress too
much as it is very routine and has 'zamaano purane'
lyrics like 'Pyar Ka Matlab Rabb Hota Hai'. Sameer
saab, even a new born kid knows this...tell us something new !!
Even Sonu Nigam, Alka Yagnik and Alka Yagnik fail to
infuse any punch in this lifeless number.
Kay Kay does a good job in Jeena Kya, which is a
philosophical number about how to move ahead in life
and battle with the odds. A serious number composed in
a 'different' manner with haunting chorus, it is again a number to
be enjoyed in the theatres along with the proceedings.
Overall music of OJJ definitely speaks of good quality
but lacks any such numbers that may sell for months to
come. Nothing of that sort that may rewrite Hindi film
music history !!
