Hansal Mehta made his debut as a director with the
black comedy Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar that starred Manoj
Vajpayee, Tabu and Saurabh Shukla. Though the movie
was good, it bombed due to two reasons - primarily
because it was an experimental film that was ahead of
times and second that this kind of film had to be
marketed in appropriately, where it failed. But the
director showed a lot of promise with his debut film.
He returns with another dark film about 'chhal' i.e.
betrayal which is the story of a cop, a gangster and
an innocent caught between them. Produced by Uday Shah
and Umesh Bagul, Chhal has music by Viju Shah and
lyrics by Amitabh Verma. Sumer of TV serial Shagun
fame plays the gangster and from the teasers so far
seems to be the surprise package of the movie with an
excellent screen presence.
The main attraction of Chhal is the title number by
Viju Shah that appears in five different arrangements
in the album. The album kick starts with the title
song by KK - the singer. Lyrics by Amitabh Verma in
this number convey the same message as Sandeep
Chowta's Ganda Hai did in Company. Viju Shah is in his
'techno best' in this number as he was in Tridev (for
which he was the music arranger), Mohra and Gupt. The
gradual pickup of the orchestra, the tabla beats -
everything makes it a foot tapping number. It also
features in the extended mix, which is again sung by
KK. In fact the number has the potential of reaching
the same heights as the title song of Gupt did, if
publicized appropriately.
Instrumentals of the prime mood of Chhal comes as
Padmini's Theme, Deceit and Omerta. Undoubtedly this
experiment pays off well and should appeal to the
listeners who appreciate quality music and crave for
"SOMETHING DIFFERENT". 'Padmini's Theme' has Viju Shah
playing the mesmerizing piano conveying the soft mood
of Chhal. Deceit - The Nostalgic Truth and Omerta -
The silence are again instrumentals of title song but
arranged differently. Again experimental pieces which
are very good.
Chup Chaap is a very soft melodious number featuring
twice in the album as solos by Shaan and Sadhna
Sargam. Shaan's vocals are maturing with every passing
day and he does an excellent job with this number.
Amitabh Verma's lyrics are different too from the
routine mushy songs. But Gum Sum - a song about life
and one's own self by Alka Yagnik is the one that can
be (surprisingly !!!) skipped as it hampers the
otherwise dark mood of the album.
And now hold your breath !! The album is not yet over.
Remember Kashmira Shah gyrating to the funky beats of
the title song of Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar sung by Asha
Bhonsle. Asha ji comes up with yet another trump with
Dil Jhanjhanale that has the similar funky style. An
item number, it should be an added attaction of the
movie.
Don't look out for any number that may suit the Swiss
locales. Want to hear a dark music score - then what
are you waiting for !!!
