Abbas Mastan-Anu Malik association has been for years
now. Remember Baazigar, Baadshah, Daraar and recently
Chori Chori Chupke Chupke. They come up once again
with a ' Little-long-in-the-making' Ajnabee which
finally gets ready to see the light of the day.And we
won't say that the wait has been worth it. That's
because between the time movie was launched (approx 2
years ago) and today, the expectations from Anu Malik
have soared sky high. When one picks an album of Anu
then one expects another Fiza, Refugee, Aks, Yadein or
MKKH . But alas, Ajnabee doesn't fall in the same
class.
'Mohabbat Naam Hai Kiska' is a kind of a 'safe -bet' .
Rope in experienced singers Udit Narayan and Alka
Yagnik, rehash a million tunes composed earlier, add
in funky beats and you have a hit number ready.
Naughty Kareena adds in to the spice imitating elder
sis Karisma's mannerisms (and even her wardrobe) in
the number.
Good news for Adnan's fans as after 'Kabhie To Nazar
Milao', his first ever song for a hindi movie hits
the stands. In 'Mehbooba Mehbooba' he touhes the same
notes as 'Lift Kara De'. It seems to be a last bit
inclusion to cash on to Adnan's popularity and is
slated to be a definite chatbuster. Sundihi Chauhan
gives ample support. Also there is a choice to be made
between the original and the E-Mix groove of the same
by DJ Khalif.
It's doubtful that 'Kasam Se Teri Aankhen' may be
lapped up with both hands. It may appeal only to the
teenagers hopping in the discs but not the average
cinegoer. In fact the feel of the whole song somewhat
resembles Anu Malik's earlier composition 'Hum dono
hai alag alag - Hum dono hai juda juda' from Main
Khiladi Tu Anari.
Lyricist Sameer is a winner in ' Meri Zindagi Mein
Ajnabee'. Sundihi Chauhan vocals have matured of late
and that shows in this song. Kumar Sanu is routine.
'Kaun Main Haan Tum' has a kind of sensuality woven
around it and is hummable. Along with Udit Narayan and
Alka Yagnik, the lead actors Akshay Kumar, Bobby Deol,
Kareena Kapoor and debutant Bipasha Basu too lend
their vocals (although it is limited to just 4
words....'kaun main..haan tum' )
Kumar Sanu sounds terribly tired and uninspired in
as-stale-as-yesterday's-newspaper 'Jab Tumhe Aashique
Maloom'. Come on now, give us a break. Kumar Sanu and
Anu Malik have given us better ones like
'Baazigar-o-Baazigar', 'Chura Ke Dil Mera', 'Dil Mein
Sanam Ki Soorat' before.
Situational 'Mujhko Neend Aa Rahi Hai' may apear good
on screen but audio wise its' a definite no-no.
'Dance Music' is no great shakes. There is a cry of '
Welcome to new millenium' in the track but it comes a
bit late as the entire universe has already celebrated
it in year 2000 itself. May be the composition was
done last year when the millenium songs were in full
swing (One by Leslie Lewis in Amir Khan starrer Mela -
'Dekho 2000 Zamana Aa Gaya')
In nutshell, Adnan's 'Mehbooba' is the sole track that
lingers long after the album is over.
On the whole, Ajnabee falls in just an average
category whose fate hinges maily on the aggressive
publicity compaign by TIPS and presence of a heavy
duty starcast.
