Post 'Hawas' and 'Girlfriend', director Karan Razdan had been slotted as a director who could make movies belonging to a particular genre only. With 'Umar', he aims at changing tracks by telling the tale of three old men [Prem Chopra, Kader Khan, Satish Kaushik] with Jimmy Shergill and Shenaz Treasurywala representing young blood. Produced by P.D. Gupta, 'Umar is an around show by Razdan who is also in charge of story, screenplay and dialogues. Shamir Tandon who had also composed for Page 3 early this year, handles the music department for 'Umar' too while Shaily Shailender writes.
There couldn’t have been a better way to begin an album like 'Umar' than to have Jagjit Singh lend his vocals for 'Khumari Chaddh Ke Utar Gayi'. An eight and a half minute musical piece, one just can't get tired of hearing this song about retrospection. In the closing years of life, one is forced to think about what one has achieved in all the time that has gone by after hearing this soulful composition by Shamir Tandon. Shaily Shailender's lyrics are poignant and touch your heart. One of the best songs by Jagjit saab to come in recent times, this meaningful number is for those who love soft music and want to hear a song for relaxation.
In complete contrast comes 'Akele Mein Hum To' by Babul Supriyo that is a love song with some heavy beats to accompany it. The song is inherently melodious and one feels that the song may have been much better if it could have been a simple light sounding melody sans any additional beats. The song revolves around a person who is happy to have a companion in life as he had been terrified of loneliness all this while. Nevertheless the song is still quite listenable and makes for a pleasant follow-up to Jagjit Singh's opening track.
Hariharan and Sunidhi Chauhan come together for 'Aankhon Mein Tum' that is a conventional love song about two hearts who have fallen in love with each other. Lyrics are extremely conventional as well but still the overall combination of lyrics, music and rendition by the lead singers manage to make this number sail through. A decent hear with melody as a theme, it reminds of such lovey-dovey compositions from the 90s.
'Duniyawalon Ko Nahi Kuch' is a track that begins with guitar strings which remind of Anu Malik's style [again from the 90s]. Manna Dey is heard after years for this 'qawalli' that also features Sonu Nigam, Kavita Krishnamurthy and Shabab Sabri. A title song in some ways, it questions if there is any right age for falling in love? All depends upon effective picturization to make such kind of tracks flow well with the narrative and 'Duniyawalon' is no exception.
Most of the songs in 'Umar' have a heard-before feel to them though it cannot be denied that they make for decent hear. In the end, if there is one good reason to go for 'Umar', it is 'Khumari Chaddh Ke Utar Gayi' by Jagjit Saab.
