2005 continues to spring surprises with every passing month. While an avalanche of biggies is ready to strike in the month of July, a small movie peeps in from nowhere to get ready for release on 22nd July. '...Yahaan', a love story between a local girl (debutant Minissha) and an army guy (Jimmy Shergill), is set in turbulent valleys of Kashmir and promises to be a never before experience on the silver screen. 'Yahaan' also marks the debut of adman Shooji Sircar who also directed spellbinding music video of 'Mann Ke Manjire' a few years back. A Sahara-One Motion Pictures, 'Yahaan' is produced by Sircar's Red Ice films production and also stars Yashpal Sharma and Mukesh Tiwari in key roles. Shantanu Moitra, whose soulful melodies impressed one and all in 'Parineeta' composes for 'Yahaan' while Gulzar saab and Nizami Bandhu write.

Peace - this is what one would define the beginning of the stirring soulful track 'Naam Adaa Likhna' in one word. Shreya Ghoshal's voice has that ice-cold effect in her vocals that bring Kashmir right in your living room. Gulzar's lyrics are as always a piece of art while Shantanu Moitra comes up with a marvelous tune once more. A love song that could be hummed around while on board a 'shikara', it moves you by its simplicity and elegance. A female centric number, it has Shaan relegated Shaan to the background while Shreya takes all the honors due to maximum time behind the mike.

Another appreciable factor about this number is the remix that comes up towards the end. It has to be admitted that it is the BEST remix of an original number as a part of a Hindi film album for quite some time. Usage of English lyrics throughout the song just changes the graph of the song that was all coy and shy till now. In this case, it becomes more urban and pep while the basic tune still remains the same. Brilliant!

After being all romantic, the same team of 'Naam Adaa' (except for Shaan) come together for the naughty 'Urzu Urzu Durkut'. A song about this young girl who has dreams in her eyes and is playing around with young kids, it can be easily called as 'Dil Hai Chota Sa ....Choti Si Asha' (Roja) of this side of the millennium. This soft track with a beautiful rhythm has a tremendous potential to be extremely popular if publicized heavily. In fact if the full length video of this song starts bombarding the TV channels, it would catch up pretty soon.

Surprise surprise - because this time around it is Shreya Ghoshal's turn to be Jaspinder Narula by coming up with a Punjabi number 'Mele Chailyan'. A traditional track composed for a celebration mood, it has simple Indian instruments like harmonium, tabla, dhol and dholki in force while a group of chorus girls sing alongside Shreya, to fill in as the girl's friends. A situational song, it is of the kind that is heard during the 'ladies sangeet' in North Indian weddings. 'Remix' of the same comes up after a gap and is foot tapping again. The traditional track is fused with an assortment of western instruments while keeping the soul of the track intact. Singer Akshay chips in with a little making the number sound like one of those UK based Punjabi tracks that one hears quite often.

Nizami Bandhu performs, composes and writes for 'Ajmer Wale Khwaja', which is a devotional song with a difference! The difference being that instead of being traditionally 'sufi', it takes the fusion route by using western instruments as the base for the tune while the song rendition still sticks to the basics. Sameeruddin and Abhishek Arora take over the programming and production of the music. A situational track, it is quite short and would be used mainly as a background piece. Same team comes up with the classical track 'Kahoon Kaise Kahoon', which is about a girl waiting for hubby to come and lift her veil. Yet another fusion experiment, it details out the feelings of the girl for whom her hubby is everything in the world. Singer Tara does a perfect rendition for 'Yahaan Theme' that is yet another fusion musical piece. Grand in appeal, it has strong western influences.

The music of 'Yahaan' is impressive and the prime factor responsible for it is its elegance. The music should play an integral part in the movie's screenplay. Most of the songs belong to a certain class and catch the mood of the movie quite well. Not one of those routine run of the mill assembly line musical score, 'Yahaan' doesn't have music just for the heck of it.
