' Dhoka Dhoka Dhoka ' – this is what one screams thrice when one looks at the inlay card for the music album of the movie ' Double Cross - Ek Dhoka '. And this is because on the first look, one realizes that there is not even a single original number in the entire album that primarily comprises of remixes of yesteryear numbers. While one settles down to this fact, the going is not too tough from hereon because the selection of songs turns out to be pretty good, hence making for a decent compilation. Nigar Khan, who acts as a pole dancer in this Vicky Tejwani produced, Sabir S. directed movie would have never dreamt that after making a career out of dancing to remixes of older movies, she may herself be a part of such a movie; the soundtrack of which would be completely devoid of any original track. Sheizwood Aashish Shastri, DJ Aqeel, Bhassker Saikiya, Lalit Sen and Shibu Pintu are the men behind various remixes.
' Aao Huzoor ' from the classic ' Kismat ', that has suddenly become hot favorite amongst the lounge circles over last couple of years finds a place yet again in this album. Remix Queen Shaswati Phukan does her take on this timeless melody remixed by Sheizwood Aashish Shastri and delivers yet again. Usage of saxophone and other contemporary instruments make ' Aao Huzoor ' sound wonderful – yet again!
DJ Aqueel presents probably the 20th version of Kishore Kumar's 'dard-bhara-geet' ' Hum Bewafa ' from 'Shalimar'. An 'Oh Baby Do Me Mix', this version has vocals camouflaged by Aqueel's added beats. Well, in this case, we would have preferred the song to have been presented as it is. No amount of added zing can bring back the same effect as the original in the case of ' Hum Bewafa '. And by the way, the seductive tone of ‘Oh Baby' throughout the duration irritates more than creating any sensuousness and proves to be a mere unwanted distraction.
In fact DJ Aqueel is (surprisingly) not too impressive in the very next track, ' Jaanu Meri Jaan ' from 'Shaan', as well that appears as a 'Jungle Mein Mangal Mix'. Nope, the jungle feel doesn't work here and all the beats and effects and props fail to do anything worthwhile to this Mohd. Rafi original.
One does get hopeful with the beginning of ' Kya Ghazab Karte Ho Jee ' from 'Love Story' as not much damage can be done to a melodious track. Bhassker Saikiya (thankfully) refrains from applying any unnecessary effects to the track and maintains a soft feel throughout. Newcomer Neena Saikiya is noticeable for her voice and rendition and keeps the innocence of the original song intact.
Apprehension strikes once again when one moves on to next track ' Laila O Laila ' from the film ' Qurbani '. The original song itself had so much punk that one is not sure what would composer Lalit Sen do extra and still not do any harm to the song. To one's relief the song is not a letdown while singer Kanchan sounds straight from the 80s, hence bringing back the nostalgia factor. As soon as one sees Shaswati Phukan on the credits for ' Mere Naseeb Mein ' (Naseeb), one gets high hopes as this is one beautiful number which if sung well today would be a hit all over again. And doesn't she do full justice to the song? Composer Shibu Pintu too doesn't try to go an extra mile and lets the original track do the talking.
Remix of the track ' Nahin Nahin ' from film ' Jawani Deewani ' that starred Ayesha Takia in her music video days (remember the drunk girl in the lift?) appears in the compilation album of ' Double Cross - Ek Dhoka '. The DJ Aqueel remixed song is obviously pleasant to hear once again, what with the voices of Asha Bhosle and Kishore Kumar kept intact.
Super hit disco track from the early 80s - ' Pyar Do Pyar Lo ' (Jaanbaaz) comes to entertain once again as an Aqueel remix. This one works yet again and one feels like hitting the dance floors. And yes, in this track's case the added props do work!
'I am a very kinky girl' - the very words at the beginning of ' Udi Baba ' from the film Vidhaata convey the message loud and clear – this one is going to be one very hot and seductive track. Sung by Vaishali Samant (who is slowly but steadily creating a space for herself), M C Sanj and Vijay Prakash, ' Udi Baba ' is one of those lesser 'remixed' number in the music world so far and hence could be treated as one of the 'originals' (pun intended) in this album of tried and tested remixes!
Sheizwood Aashish Shastri, whose remix ' Aao Huzoor ' kickstarted the album, also brings the album to an end with ' Vaada Na Tod ' from ' Dil Tujhko Diya '. Sung by Varsha and Xenia Ali, the song doesn't follow the conventional route. Hence while the original was a melody, the remix is more of a mix of melody and rhythm.
Album of ' Double Cross ' could well have been titled 'Hot Shot Remix', 'Baby Girl Remix' or some other name if it wouldn't have been created for a movie. Though chances are highly remote that any of the songs would be featuring full-fledged in the movie, they may just be as a part of Nigar's pole dance sequence. In fact one shouldn't be surprised if none of the songs appear in any form during the movie and the album turns out to have been marketed for pure promotional reasons. Treat 'Double Cross' as a remix compilation of the yesteryears and it may just appeal to you if you are fond of such music.
