Shakti - The Power is a high voltage drama starring
Karisma Kapoor, Nana Patekar, Sanjay Kapoor, Shahrukh
Khan (in special appearance) and Aishwarya Rai in a
guest appearance. Shakti is the first ever production
of Sridevi. Earlier she was supposed to do the role,
then Kajol came into picture but finally the role went
to Karisma Kapoor. Sanjay Kapoor plays her husband who
is the son of a feudal lord played by Nana Patekar.
Shahrukh Khan acts in a cameo role who helps her fight
her war against all odds. Ismail Darbar is the
composer whereas Mehboob writes. Krishna Vamsi is the
director of Shakti.
Well...Ishq pehle 'kambakth' to tha hi, ab 'kamina'
bhi ho gaya !!!! Laila Majnu, Heer Ranjha, Romeo
Juliet and co. may be really turnning in their graves
when told about the progress romance is making in the
hindi movie scene. But Mr. Sameer states this in a
straight forward manner - 'Kar de mushkil jeena, ishq
kameena'. Great !!! Sonu Nigam and Alka Yagnik have a
party time while singing this one. Added to it
Aishwarya's first stint in a 200% pure masala item
number and Shahrukh Khan's electric presence. Sensual
choreography by Farah Khan deserves special mention as
it presents Aishwarya in an altogether new mode.
Another remarkable aspect is that how comfortably have
the pair of Khan and Aishwarya made transition from
the sophisticated image of Devdas and Paro to this
'Ishq Kameena'. Thanks to guest composer Anu Malik for
his ready-to-serve tune for this number that it has
become a chartbuster overnight.
Though sung by accomplished singers like Adnan Sami
and Kavita Krishnamurthy in solo versions, 'Hum Tum
Mile' is an annoyingly slow number that just doesn't
move at all. No problems with the singing here but the
composition by Ismail Darbar is just 'too different'.
Doesn't seem that masses will really approve to this
number as it seems more like a sad number rather than
romantic !!! It just doesn't move you at all. Yes, but
credit should certainly go to the Adnan for the way he
begins the song.
Mohammad Salamat renders another very slow number love
song 'Jhoomti Ghata Mein' which deals with Ismail's
favourite - Chaand i.e 'Moon'. Mehboob's lyrics are
good and Salamat's rendering is impressive as well.
The song may have fitted well in an out and out love
story but seems out of place in Shakti, which is a
powerful drama flick. There is a flute instrumental of
the same number also by Naveen which is again good.
E-Chand by Kavita Krishnamurthy is a sad number that
leads one to just one destination - FORWARD button of
your stereo player. A very depressing song - it
literally makes you feel the pain. Dunno whether this
was the intention of everyone involved with the music
score, but the song just makes you feel repulsive.
'Dumroo Baje' by Sukhwinder Singh and Mahamaxmi is a
celebration song composed in a folky style which seems
to be picturised on Nana Patekar. Nothing great shakes
- and no we are not even comparing this to Dhol Baje
from HDDCS as we have had enough of comparisons with
the latter and it would be an insult to it if we
compare it with 'Dumroo Baje'. So, this says it all -
doesn't it?? 'Mere Munne Raja' by Anuradha Paudwal is
a mother-child song which is to some extent hummable.
A situational song, one can't expect the
money-shelling public to buy Shakti for this number.
Alka Yagnik, Adnan Sami, Ravindra Sathe and Prakash
sing 'Dil Ne Pukara' which is the only noticeable
number after 'Ishq Kameena'. A melodious number, at
least it is listenable.
If reports are to be believed, it was Sanjay Kapoor
who had put across this idea of including the item
number 'Ishq Kameena' in Shakti. Thanks to him,
otherwise music of Shakti would have been really
'kamzor'...errrr..i mean weak !!!
