  Music Reviews
By Joginder Tuteja, November 15, 2001 - 15:14 IST

If only two-three average songs could help an album stay afloat, then the music industry would have been a better place to survive in!! Four lyricists (Faaiz Anwar, Dev Kohli, Praveen Bhardwaj and Nerendra Bedi) and six music directors (Sanjeev-Darshan, Nikhil-Vinay, Daboo Malik and Anand Raaj Anand) for one 'Pyaasa' !! Does all this effort really quench the thirst? Read the review, listen to the album and judge it by yourself !!!

Pyaasa is about three characters played by Miss Universe Yukta Mookhey, Mast hero - Aftab Shivdasani and popular model Zulfi who all have thirst about something in life. It is directed by A. Muthu who made his debut with Abhishek Bachchan starrer 'Tera Jadoo Chal Gaya'. Ramesh Sharma is the producer.

The only hummable number in the album is 'Milti Hai Jhukti Hai' by Alka Yagnik and Udit Narayan. Daboo Malik who has recently composed for 'Yeh Zindagi Ka Safar' has been roped in for this song and Praveen Bhardwaj is the lyricist. The song is very much in the style of bade bhai Anu Malik's trademark melodious score. But with due credit to Daboo, here the song is in true terms 'inspired' and not 'copied' .The choreography is interesting too as here both the heroes are shown more than happy handing over the girl to each other. Now that makes for an interesting storyline !!

Dandiya number 'Aankhon Mein Leke Pyar' has Karsan Sargathiya repeating the 'Dholi Taro Dhol Baaje' act from 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam'. The similarity is so remarkable that one just smiles at the blatant copying. Udit Narayan and Kavita Krishnamurthy sing the rest of the number which is as fresh as one week old vegetable. For a change, this dandiya doesn't excite. 'Is Mohabbat Ke Siva' is another typical romantic number which is just so-so. It is one of those compositions which require a minimum of effort and time and are done for the sake of having a song in the movie. Sonu Nigam and Alka Yagnik sing this yet another 'suna-sunaya' track which has nothing new at all.

'Soni Roop Di' by Sardool Sikandar is a hardcore Punjabi number which may not find universal patronage. Everything in the song from the visuals, choreography, singing style and the gloss resemble one of those millions of Punjabi music videos from T-Series. Dev Kohli writes the lyrics and 'punjabi songs specialist' Anand Raaj Anand dictates the tunes. The song is picturised on Aftab and Yukta where Zulfi is relegated just in the category of extras. A real sad affair!!

Sunidhi Chauhan gets in her poppish mould in 'Tera Pyar Ka Chhaya Nasha'. It is supposed to be sensual in feel but falls flat. It is repeated twice - once with Abhijeet and then with Adnan Sami, but doesn't impress anywhere. Repetition of a song with different singers has become the newest trend in the music circuit these days. Pray why?

'Milte Milte Sanam' is a love song that has very ordinary lyrics and music by Faaiz Anwar and Nikhil Vinay respectively. The song has nothing special to write home about. Can be given a very easy skip. 'Na Jaane Mera Kya Hoga' is typically Sonu Nigam. It is an OK number number in the appreciation of the girl that can be listened for a few times primarily for its rhythmic beats.

'Usko Pata Hai' by Sudesh Bhonsle and Narendra Bedi is a tapori number which has the hero aiming for dhan-daulat, gaadi-bangla and a ladki in his life. Hero ka 'Bas Itna Sa Khwaab Hai'...that's all !!! The number is situational and all depends upon the way the song is presented and fitted in the movie. But expecting it to be one of those tapori numbers 'Aati Hai Khandala -Ghulam' or 'Aslam Bhai - Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega' or 'Excuse Me - Style'.....well, FORGET IT !!!

Sanjeev Darshan will have to do something good really fast to help themselves stay afloat. Else they too may fall in just a one hit wonder (Mann) bracket.
