31 of 33 people found this review helpful Dev D is indeed a coming-of-age film, not merely for the protagonist, Devender Singh Dhillon, but it is a brilliant breakthrough for Bollywood too. It really doesn't matter whether the film ends up as a box office scorcher...

12 of 14 people found this review helpful Nine minutes into Dev D, you realise that the director isn't aiming at an emotional connect with the hero, but instead trying to alienate you from him entirely.

10 of 12 people found this review helpful The films constantly connects you with Dev's hopelessness, Paro's perplexity and Chanda's circumstances.

6 of 8 people found this review helpful What's great about Dev D is the fact that it isn't pretentious; it weaves reality, acknowledges the fact constantly that the plot is in fact motivated from Devdas and showcases an alternate youth culture.

4 of 6 people found this review helpful It's not only that Kashyap has successfully stirred clear of drawing caricatures of the characters we already know, he's reinvented the wheel in other ways too.

4 of 6 people found this review helpful The film is as much a story of Chanda and Paro as it is of Dev Singh Dhillon.

4 of 7 people found this review helpful Dev D is not Devdas. Agreed that it is built on the same premise, but it's not Devdas. Anurag Kashyap takes the concept of one of the most desired lovers and turns him into a guy with sex on his mind more than anything else. Someone who asks his Paro to email him a naked photograph of hers! And Paro does it!

4 of 7 people found this review helpful A landmark film in the way it portrays youth and young love, and superbly etched with irony and humor, Dev D marries Kashyap's typical stylistic flourish with multi-layered substance, and this is truly a match made in heaven.

2 of 11 people found this review helpful The original Devdas is about the classes but here while class is discussed, it is on the fringes. On the whole Dev's reasons to spiral into a world of drugs and alcohol aren?t backed up hard enough by the director.

2 of 12 people found this review helpful The film somehow is salvaged to a large extent by the two leading ladies Mahi Gill and Kalki.

3 of 18 people found this review helpful The film's second half is indulgent and repetitive to the point of being excessive, as it focuses much of its attention on Chanda; and let down by a disappointing performance and stilted dialogue delivery by Koechlin, it never really regains the momentum or the sheer bravura of its early parts.
