THE FILM

"You want to say sorry? Fair enough, put it down on a piece of paper" - The moment Mr. Richie Rich (Humayun Saeed) says this to his mistress' (Shahana Goswami) brother (Adhyayan Suman) and the reaction that follows, you end up exclaiming to yourself - 'Hey, co-directors Raksha Mistry and Hasnain Hyderabadwala definitely know their job well!' This one is indeed a highly dramatic scene that works sans any 'top of the voice' dialogues, fancy camera angles, high pitched background score or overtly placed melodrama!

To think about it, a story about a brother being totally aware about his sister's necessity for being the mistress of an entrepreneur would have resulted in a regular pot boiler drama. But not in case of Jashnn. Yes, they are helpless but the siblings do not make much noise about it. There is a guilt factor but not overpowering enough to fall into the self pity trap. Instead it's the choice being made and though that's not the best that one could have made, it's the circumstances and 'need to pay monthly bills' that forces them to embrace insult practically every day!

It's these series of insults, embarrassments, loss of self respect and an overpowering sense of defeat that makes Jashnn a moment of celebration when Adhyayan and Shahana finally decide to throw it all away and live just for that moment of dignity. Watch out for the scene when Adhyayan decides to drop his ambitions of being a rock star and starts working in a petrol pump followed by a janitor in a five star hotel!

In a regular film, a female lead opposite a hero may just happen to be an eye candy who comes in for those two emotional scenes and lends a supporting hand. Well, in case of Jashnn, there is much more to that as Anjana Sukhani is not just present but very much visible in the story of Adhyayan. She doesn't try to be extra cute; instead she is practical, quick decision maker (it doesn't take much convincing for her to say 'I do' to Adhyayan) and is strong willed not to create a scene and barge out of Adhyayan's house even as he requests her to leave due to his own sorry state! As Sara, she bags the opportunity of playing her strongest character ever in her short career so far and is bound to make film makers sit up and take notice.

From Shahana, it is expected that she would come up with a powerhouse performance and she delivers as expected, what with audiences being reminded of Smita Patil. She comes with a solid performance once again and is especially noticeable in the scenes where she interacts with Adhyayan. Watch out for the one where she sits down with him and discusses her 'need' for being with Humayun!

Talking about Humayun, he just looks the part and is a welcome import from Pakistan. Someone who is shrewd and mean, he doesn't overdo his part and stays within the character without getting filmy. He is terrific in number of scenes, most notably being the ones where he ridicules Adhyayan in his office, watches him sweep floors in a washroom, confronts Anjana towards the latter part of the film and finally the powerhouse climax during the song 'Dard E Tanhai'.

And now I have to definitely mention about the star of the show - Adhyayan Suman. To begin with, it is very easy, simple and harmless actually to dismiss a performance which is coming from a newcomer. Especially someone who doesn't quite come with a star background. But that would be quite mean for someone like Adhyayan who in his first film as a lead hero comes up with a fantastic act.

As someone who is seeing his life cutting down into pieces practically every day, he is incredible in number of scenes, most notably being:

- When he is challenged by Anjana's male friend and subsequently he threatens to pull the trigger
- His confrontation with Humayun when he calls Shahana a bitch
- His subsequent offer of apologies in Humayun's office
- Scene just before the interval when he is thrown out of the house by Shahana
- When he receives his first pay check as a janitor
- His scene in the pub where he attempts to steal money
- His return to the pub and conversation with the Manager
- And last but not the least, the entire climax song and the scene which follows

He is a revelation and it would be unfair if his performance is dismissed.

CONCLUSION

Yes, the film flopped at the box office but the fact remains that director duo of Raksha Mistry and Hasnain Hyderabadwala get the emotional quotient on in a big way and make you reach out for that tissue paper for most part of the film's second half. In fact the film is fairly balanced in both the parts with first half being highly dramatic and second half brining the tears on. Add to that some fantastic compositions by Nouman Javaid and Sharib-Toshi that keep the film's narrative seamless by integrating perfectly with it. Forget the box office outcome of the film and give this film a dekko. If emotional tearjerkers work for you then this won't disappoint you at all.
