THE FILM

Do Knot Disturb is one of those films where one has to search for relevance of the title with the overall premise. So what does Do Knot Disturb really stand for? And why a 'Knot' instead of a 'Not'? The makers may come up with certain reasons but the fact remains that at the end of the day, it just turns out to be a catchy title more than anything else. Another justification could be that since the entire second half of the film is placed in a five star hotel, the title Do Knot Disturb comes in handy.

The plot of Do Knot Disturb is very basic and something that you immediately identify with considering the fact it comes with a David Dhawan tag. His own Saajan Chale Sasural or even Anees Bazmee's Sandwich had a similar one line plot which was about a man having a relationship outside marriage. The culprit is the same in each of the three films i.e. Govinda. This time around, David Dhawan doesn't waste any time in setting up the basic premise and within first five minutes itself, one gets to know about Govinda's relationship with Lara Dutta.

Other characters like Govinda's wife Sushmita Sen, Riteish Deshmukh (a stranger who is hired by Govinda to camouflage as Lara's boyfriend), Lara's ex-lover Sohail Khan and Ranvir Shorey, a detective hired by Sushmita to keep a tab on Govinda, are established in a jiffy. With the basic groundwork well in place, David Dhawan does really well in preparing audiences for some good fun in store. Even during these 45 odd minutes, there are close to half a dozen odd scenes that keep audiences smiling throughout and even breaking into full throated laughter at number of instances.

Watch out for the scenes where Govinda and Riteish meet for the first time, their subsequent interaction in a restaurant or Riteish and Lara spending their nights together. While Govinda gets his trademark laughing hat on, Riteish and Lara do much more than just compliment his comic timing.

However, it's the post interval points where the narrative isn't as strong as one would have expected. The entire episode around 'hiding the dead body' isn't really amusing even though a few isolated scenes, courtesy their slapstick flavour, get a few laughs on. The New Year song is completely unwarranted and though one doesn't quite search for logic in a film like these, even for those who have kept their thinking caps home would be in for some 'now what's that' moment.

Picture this: A dead body is all over the dance floor, Sushmita Sen is in the same hotel where the festivities are going but she is completely missing and then Lara as well as Riteish have a sudden change in heart. That's not all as an altogether different story with Ranvir Shorey's 'John Mathews' act begins which further stretches the film by 15 minutes. And that whole epilogue featuring Govinda and Sushmita doesn't carry the required punch as well.

As actors, Govinda and Riteish get equal footage and both do pretty well in their respective roles. Lara is required to go over the top and she does well with icing on the cake being her holds-no-bar skin show. Sushmita Sen surprisingly looks completely out of shape in most of her scenes. Also she is not more than a second lead in the film and has limited screen time. One wonders how Sohail Khan agreed to do this film though which doesn't add anything to his resume. As for Ranvir Shorey, he deserves much better than films like a Do Knot Disturb or a Singh Is Kinng.

In nutshell, Do Knot Disturb turns out to be a passable film that one can comfortably watch but care not to think about for even 15 minutes once the film is through.

SPECIAL FEATURES

- Making of the Film
- Making of songs 'Bebo Remix' and 'Mere Naal'

Making segment of Do Knot Disturb holds your attention at places. Interviews with principal cast and crew members have a funny tone to it throughout, something that goes with the genre which Do Knot Disturb belongs to. Though there aren't any anecdotes per se that are shared with the viewers, clippings from the actual shooting take them right on the sets. It all does become monotonous after a while though, especially when the making around the songs is narrated.

Rs. 199/=

CONCLUSION

If one moves beyond the relevance of the title, Do Knot Disturb turns out to be just about alright. It begins with a bang, meets a decent interval point and sees an uneven second half where narrative meanders from being riotous at places and plain average at certain points. Especially towards the latter part of the film, one starts looking at the watch, something which is never a good sign for the film. Not that the proceedings turn boring or unbearable; it's just that the joke is stretched for a little too long when one would have wanted a much crisper culmination.
