THE FILM
This was one film which couldn't perform at the box office the way it's makers would have expected due to sheer perception factor. Why is the perception factor being discussed here? Because the film in itself was not bad. It was a decent masala fare which would have performed at least reasonably well at the box office had the sentiments around Himesh Reshammiya returning as Monty not been that strong. There were many out there who were not willing to accept Himesh's rockstar act, even without seeing him on the screen. Something that happened in case of Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag where every Tom, Dick, Harry and his hairdresser had a thing or two to say about the film even without watching it! Of course, Karzzzz is a far better outing than Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag but the fact is that there were many who were busy commenting on the film and its lack of viability and how it wasn't a patch on Subhash Ghai's Karz without even seeing it. This only proved to be harmful for this Satish Kaushik directed version which did have a jittery outing in its opening days, only to see a downslide as days progressed.
One area where Himesh has proved to be quite good is being very comfortable in the dramatic sequences. Note the interval point with Urmila Matondkar where he kick starts the cat and mouse game, the pre-climax where he exposes her in front of his entire family or the high voltage climax. These are some of the scenes where Himesh does prove that he has it in him if given the right scenes, something which also makes these scenes stand out when compared with the rest of the film.
Of course, in light hearted sequences, he tends to be a little stiff, something which he would surely be working upon, considering some of his upcoming movies are romantic comedies. On the other hand Shweta Kumar, the debutant girl, looks nice and acts fairly well in the limited space that she gets. Urmila impresses though in a glamorous part and while she overdoes the entire pout thing, it goes with the dramatic feel of the film.
Any downers? Well, yes. 4-5 songs which literally come back to back in the first half of the film drive you to the point of exasperation. Moreover, many of them look just the same, something which makes one get restless since as an audience; you look forward to the entire reincarnation chapter unfolding fast. How one wishes that the temptation to have a dozen odd songs in an album, just because the film stars Himesh Reshammiya, could have been curbed in the larger interest of the film. Also, one misses the menace of Sir Juda since the character played by Gulshan Grover unwittingly seems amusing than threatening. One would have wanted some more thrilling moments revolving around Gulshan Grover, Urmila and Himesh.
As for the look of the film, it is top notch as one can sense that no expense has been spared to given it a lavish look. The special effects in the plane crash scene are plain average and how one wishes that more finesses could have come into the proceedings. However, the entire execution of the climax with a haunting background score in tow does balance it out.
Underperformance of Karzzzz at the box office was clearly unfortunate for Himesh Reshammiya because as an actor, he showed a vast improvement over his debut venture Aap Kaa Surroor. Of course, as an actor he is still on a road to improvement and one expects him to become more and more comfortable in front of the camera in his subsequent ventures.
PACKAGING
The DVD comes in an ordinary plastic case. For a film on which crores were spent on the promotion, one certainly expected a better DVD packaging.
DURATION
The film comes in a two DVD pack with the film's duration being 137 minutes
SPECIAL FEATURES
There is an additional DVD on the 'Making of the film' which is hardly exciting since it is more of a promotional material for entertainment channels which was shown before the release of the film. Himesh Reshammiya, Satish Kaushik, Shweta Kumar, Sameer, Bhushan Kumar, Ajay Kapoor (Exec Producer) and Tulsi Kumar talk about their association with the film but frankly, there is nothing in their talks that one hasn't heard before in hazaar interviews, news items and gossips that were on full-on display during the making of the film. While each of them conveniently ends up appreciating the other's work, this segment comes to an end. Moreover, for some strange reasons, there are two 'shorter options' of this section that have been made available to the audience. Don't quite understand why? Also, since the full length segment spans a mere 20 minutes, one wonders why it was not included as a part of the main film DVD itself rather than being included as a second DVD. This one can be given an easy skip!

CONCLUSION
Karzzzz is a film which can be given one watch at least if one is willing to keep aside the prejudice of watching Himesh Reshammiya in his acting avtar. Once you settle down to the fact that Himesh is indeed Monty and stop comparing the film with the Rishi Kapoor starrer, Karzzzz is not a bad watch at all. Of course one may be tempted to recollect the sequences from the original but if one watches Karzzzz as a standalone film, chances are that you won't mind giving it a dekko!
