THE FILM
In early 2008, Halla Bol released which starred Ajay Devgan as the central protagonist. In the film he was shown as a Bollywood superstar. Wait, this review is about Golmaal Returns, so why are we talking about Halla Bol here? Well, there is a reason behind that. In Halla Bol, there was a scene featuring a few characters where they discussed the 'mantra' behind making a film successful at box office. It was stated that today is the time for getting that 'big opening weekend'. Once you get a horde of audience into the theaters, it was a matter of surviving for a week. If you are able to achieve that successfully, rest assured the film would make money because by the time audience would realize what it was all about, the film would have made its money and comfortably sailed through.
This is what happened in the case of Golmaal Returns.
When it released on Diwali, it enjoyed a huge opening for itself. No negative reviews bothered audience as they visited theaters in hordes and ensured that makers got a large share of their money back in the opening weekend itself. Add to that some genuinely funny moments in the film that kept the audience engaged and Golmaal Returns didn't just make good money over the weekend but also enjoyed a bountiful first week, hence resulting in record collections. Of course, the collections did fall over the next few weeks but that by no means made any difference to the final box office outcome of Golmaal Returns which enjoyed almost double the collections of Golmaal, the first in the series.
To think of it, Golmaal Returns was an extended spoof movie that took its cue from headlines that originated from anything and everything related to Bollywood in recent times. Picture these:
- The entire Saawariya sequence. Seriously, this was the 'maa' of all spoofs since not just a song or a character was picked from Sanjay Leela Bhansali's box office flop, the entire sequence of events too were rearranged to make for the last 30 minutes of Golmaal Returns. Whether it was 'Gulabo' and her 'Saawariya' or the songs or the costumes or the accent, just about everything was spoofed by Rohit Shetty and his team. Result? There were laughs all around.
- Saawariya wasn't the only Bhansali film that was picked. Arshad Warsi re-did the Rani Mukherjee sequence from Black yet again, after Golmaal!
- Bhansali had company with even Yash Raj Films not being spared. Their anthem sound from Tashan was played in full glory as the protagonists walked towards the villains in the climax in a manner similar to that of Akshay, Anil, Saif and Kareena.
- Inspiration also came from Rajnikanth's Sivaji with an entire song 'Tha Karke' being pasteurized in an extra large manner and over the top manner with stunts and animation coming together in a big way
- Rohit Shetty ensured that he didn't offend the big daddies of Bollywood. He spoofed his own Golmaal with not just quite a few passing references but also a direct dig on Sharman Joshi who made way for Shreyas Talpade in the film.
- Seems everyone just allowed the film to be one spoof fest. This is why Kareena allowed Arshad Warsi to wear a 'Saif' tattoo on his chest while Ajay made fun of his own flops like Raju Chacha, Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag and Cash!
- A sweet little moment in the film saw Shreyas Talpade, who played the character of Anthony Gonsalves, stuttering his name as Anthony Talpade at one juncture. Cute!
- Not to be left behind, Tusshar allowed a running spoof on Balaji 'saas-bahu' serials throughout the length of the film. Not just that, Kareena Kapoor, who played Tusshar's sister in the film, was called Ekta.
In mood to enjoy laughs coming from sequences as above and a lot more? Then Golmaal Returns is for you!

CONCLUSION
If looking at getting rid of your blues then play this flick on. You don't need to sit through it for an entire 2 hours because it doesn't really mandate an end to end watch. Play it from any point in the narrative and resume it a while after a pause, it would still keep the laugh quotient on. Golmaal Returns is what one calls as a fun, harmless film.
