Adapted from the book 'Raja Ravi Varma' written by Ranjit Desai, Rang Rasiya traces the journey of a talented painter looking for his inspiration.
Raja Ravi Varma (Randeep Hooda), an aspiring painter gets married to a princess in Kerala, only to find, that his dream of becoming a painter will remain unfulfilled out since his wife considers it demeaning. Constantly in hunt for an inspiration, he comes across the good looking Kamini, a servant in his household who inspires him to paint his masterpieces which are later, hailed by the King of Travancore. But when the death of the King leaves Ravi Varma disheartened, he decides to set out on a different journey and meets the beautiful, serene and graceful Sugandha. Inspired and awed by her beauty, Ravi Varma captures the essence of Gods and Goddesses in his paintings through her. But this doesn't go down well with the Hindu fundamentalists who find it offensive. Fighting against the world for creative freedom, and aesthetic art, Rang Rasiya is the struggle of Raja Ravi Varma to re-define the beauty of paintings.
