Minions (English) Review {3.5/5} & Review Rating

Making a prequel especially after two parts of a film have been superhits is by no means an easy task. However, director Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda have attempted just that with the recent release MINIONS that is a prequel to the DESPICABLE ME series. But will the latest film based on the pint sized, denim clad, pill shaped, yellow characters live up to the expectations? Let's find out.

MINIONS begins at the dawn of time starting as single-celled yellow organisms, that evolve through the ages, perpetually serving the most despicable of masters. Continuously unsuccessful at keeping these masters, starting from a T. Rex to Napoleon, the Minions find themselves without someone to serve and fall into a deep depression. But one Minion named Kevin (Pierre Coffin) has a plan, and he-alongside the ukulele maestro Stuart (Pierre Coffin) and lovable little Bob (Pierre Coffin) ventures out into the world to find a new evil boss for his brethren to follow. The trio embarks upon a thrilling journey that ultimately leads them to their next potential master, Scarlet Overkill (Sandra Bullock), the world's first-ever female super-villain. They travel from frigid Antarctica to New York City, ending in modern London, where they must face their biggest challenge to date saving all of Minion kind from annihilation.

Going into MINIONS that comes after two highly successful films DESPICABLE ME and DESPICABLE ME 2, we wondered if this film which is basically a spin off from a major franchise would be capable of holding its own in terms of entertainment quotient and box office collections. However, the film that starts off at the beginning of time traverses the journey of the Minions from single celled being to what they have grown to become in the much loved DESPICABLE ME series in a beautiful funny narrative. Another bone of contention was that though the earlier films made the lovable pill shaved yellow creatures into rage, what worked well were the inexplicable language they talk and their faithfulness towards their evil master. However, would a full length feature film based solely on creatures whose language we cannot understand work with the audience. But after watching the film, we came out pleasantly surprised. Not only do the Minions live up to their tag of being the ever funny yellow beings but their language has since begun to make sense.

While the film takes the first 20 or minutes to set the premise, and could leave the viewer some serious questions about their decision to watch the film, MINIONS begins to come into its own once the three main protagonists Kevin, Stuart and Bob reach Villain Con (the Comic Con for Villains). From here on, the entire film is a rollercoaster ride of jokes, gags and the bizarre minion logic that shapes up into a marvelous feature film. Writer Brian Lynch does an amazing job with the characterizations especially since the film that is majorly based in the 70s London. In fact the British stereotypes in this film are brilliant and just downright hilarious. Coming to the very talented Pierre Coffin who voices all the minions, though lacking the effort to make each one sound different, Pierre does imbibe the devilish yellow little critters that creates the much needed emotional connect.

But what got us the most was the stunning voiceover performance from Sandra Bullock. Despite being a definite far cry from her usual films and roles, Bullock does a good job with Scarlett, bringing a human dimension to an animated character. With notable references to pop culture and conspiracy theories thrown in among the gags, MINIONS is a treat for both the adults and kids.

The simplistic nature of the film coupled with visual cues and the 'Bananas', MINIONS heaps on the humour for any film lover. Though the film does have its share of loopholes, directors Kyle Balda and Pierre Coffin have done a good job in making a film that can rightly be titled one of the most successful spin off films. While quite a few of the gags that were seen in the trailer do tend to slow down the proceedings, the film doesn't fall flat.

On the whole, if you are a fan of those funny little yellow critters then MINIONS is definitely a must watch this weekend.
