Happy Bhag Jayegi Review {3.0/5} & Review Rating

EXPECTATIONS

When it comes to an Aanand L. Rai film, rest assured the music setting would be up North. Right from Tanu Weds Manu and its sequel to Raanjhanaa, there has been a strong North Indian influence in the soundtrack that has been put together. It is expected to be no different for Happy Bhag Jayegi either, courtesy the fact that the film is yet again set up North. Moreover, it is a welcome relief to have a single composer (Sohail Sen) and lyricist (Mudassar Aziz - also the film's director) coming together for the music department, hence promising certain consistency in the sound.

MUSIC

Happy Bhag Jayegi gets an upbeat beginning for itself with Harshdeep Kaur and Shahid Mallya coming together for an out and out Punjabi number 'Happy Oye'. A fast paced celebration number with the sound of 'dhol' accompanying the song right through, 'Happy Oye' has a good hook to it and moves ahead smoothly. While you have heard many a song like this in a Yash Raj film earlier, you don't mind listening to the sound all over again.

'Gabru Ready To Mingle Hai' pretty much continues from where 'Happy Oye' left and this time around, it 'Reintroduces Diana Penty' with Mika Singh, hence resulting in a good enough cocktail to be relished. With a mix of Hindi and English lyrics, this one is a peppy outing that is sung in a characteristic 'andaaz' by Mika Singh and doesn't fail to entertain. While Dee MC writes the English rap lyrics, coming together of Tarranum Malik and Neeti Mohan adds further spice to this fun number that also has Danish Sabri chipping in. A winner all the way.

The album takes a twist of sorts with the setting changing from fun and dance to romantic, what with Altamash Faridi coming behind the mike for 'Aashiq Tera'. The song brings in certain 'thehrav' to the proceedings and the 'qawalli' setting only makes it sound different from the other soundtracks that are in the offering. A sweet sounding number that should do well along with the film's narrative.

The song that turns out to be one of the best that Sohail Sen has to offer in Happy Bhag Jayegi is 'Zara Si Dosti'. A beautiful track that has melody at the core of it and is sung quite well by Arijit Singh, this is one of those numbers that make you play it all over again. Expect the film's narrative to hit a high when the song appears on screen. The song maintains certain uniformity right through its duration and entertains.

Javed Ali is roped in for the final song of the album, 'Yaaram'. This one is pretty much in continuation of 'Aashiq Tera' and in the process helps the soundtrack to retain certain consistency. With a Sufi touch to it, the song moves at a smooth pace and is yet another number that should blend seamlessly with the film. Though as a standalone number this one would take quite some time to settle down, as a part of the soundtrack it works.

OVERALL

The music of Happy Bhag Jayegi may not be extraordinary but then it doesn't have any element either that would make you look the other way. With a mix of romantic and dance numbers, this one plays the balancing act well and brings on a soundtrack that is just apt for the film.
