Blog: New Year's Resolution for Bollywood
By IndiaFM News Bureau, December 31, 2007 - 10:25 IST
It's that time of year again-2008 is lurking right around the corner, and people are busy jotting down their new year's resolutions. Here are a few New Year's for Bollywood…
1. A few young men-With young actresses like Jiah Khan, Sonam Kapoor, Kangana Ranaut, and Deepika Padukone flooding into Bollywood, actively recruiting a few young actors will not only bridge the age-gap but will also offer more realistic on-screen chemistry. It is rather agonizing to watch a 38+ Ajay Devgan romancing 25-year-old Nisha Kothari and a 35+ Himesh Reshammiya wooing a 16-year-old Hansika Motwani. No wonder filmmakers have to churn out controversial films like Nisshabd and Cheeni Kum-actresses are getting younger and younger by the day, as Bollywood actors are rapidly approaching the 35 and 40 mark.
2. Shatter the glass ceiling-Whether it is music directors, lyricists, directors, producers, or cinematographers, Bollywood lacks sufficient, successful females in virtually all of its facets except for acting and singing.
3. Switch off the mic-SaReGaMaPa, Indian Idol, Antakshri, Voice of India, Jhoom India, Fame Gurukul, and even Bathroom Singer-All Indians are certainly singers at heart, but having a plethora of musical shows at the same time not only leads to dissonance, but also eats away from TRPs for each show.
4. Adding exxtraa letters does not make it a good film-I do not care what astrologists and numerologists say, but a pathetic film is a pathetic film and adding in a few extra letters is not going to increase extra ticket sales. Work on the quality of the film, not the quantity of letters in the film's title!
5. More marketing, more money-With Web sites like YouTube making new releases available to viewers at the click of a button, it is important to conduct more marketing research and implement sophisticated marketing and public relations strategies to round up all potential movie-goers into the theatre.
6. Spare the “aashanaa,” “manzar,” and “anjuman,” and save us from a repetitive “afsaana” -It really does not take much effort for me to guess the name of the lyricist as soon as I hear these overused words. It is time to search for a few new lyricists and a few original songs.
7. Stop the sports frenzy-Ever since the success of Lagaan, sports-oriented films like Iqbal, Chak de India, Tararumpum, Hat Trick, Chainkulli ki Mainkulli, Say Salaam India, and Goal have been released. 2008 is the perfect year to delve into unexplored territory.
8. Don't remix the remix-Club Mix, Lounge Mix, Club Villa-DJs can come up with as many song titles as they want, but a remix is a remix and having 5 variations of it is not going to strike a cord with audiences.
9. Bring up the self-esteem-Forget about winning an Oscar and work towards achieving some credibility worldwide, so Hollywood producers put winning an Indian award on their wish-list.
10. Be optimistic-Indeed, Bollywood cinema has a long path to tread to attain the goal of perfection. Not all of these ideals can be met in just a year, but, hey, 2009 will be here in another 12-months time, and any unfulfilled resolutions can be added to next year's list!
