Shibani Kashyap on performing at INS Vikrant and more
By IndiaFM News Bureau, February 28, 2007 - 06:39 IST
Shibani Kashyap the Delhi girl who is a composer, singer, and performer has already started to carve a niche in the Bollywood music world. The young singer
who started with the mellifluous Sajna Aa Bhi Jaa (Waisa Bhi Hota Hai) rocked the audience with her song ‘Zinda Hoon Main’, and is now coming up with
films like 1971, based on prisoners of war.
Here she gets chatty with IndiaFM about her upcoming films and her live performance at the music launch of 1971 at INS Vikrant.
Can you tell us something about your performance on INS Vikrant for the music launch of 1971?
The film is about the 1971 war and in that war what happened was that even though India had won the war against Pakistan there were a bunch of prisoners of war who
never returned from Pakistan. There were some who did return but there is still no news of the others who never returned. This film is a dedication to the grieved families
of the POW’s. So keeping all this in mind we are very symbolically performing on the INS Vikrant which was the fighter ship and was involved in the 1971 war and was
also responsible for making us win this war. So we are doing this music launch in a very meaningful way keeping in mind the context of the film. And as this area is a high
security area there will be a lot of defence people present at the venue along with people from the press, media and the cast and crew of the film

Could you tell us something about the music of 1971?
The music for the film has been composed by Akash Sagar. I think he is India’s youngest music composer and is all of 18 years old. I have sung the theme song and the
title track of the film whose music video is currently running on air which features me and some inserts from the film. I will also be performing it live in the show for the
music launch.
Amrit Sagar told us that you did not charge even a penny for any of the songs you have sung for the film
I come from an army background. My father was also involved in the 1971 war and some of his friends were POW’s. So I am very close to this film and I relate to the
film very well. This film will make people aware that there are 56 POW’s who still haven’t come back.

What do you prefer more – singing or composing?
Both actually! I love singing, singing is my passion but I love composing too. It’s a part of me being a musician; it’s like two sides of the same coin.
Did you take any formal training in singing?
My mother is a classically trained singer so she has taught me. I was also inclined towards westeren classical music so I took my training in western classical vocal
training from the Delhi school of music.
How did you start of in Bollywood?
It happened by accident, I had made the song Sajna Aaa Bhi Jaa for my album and at that point of time I happened to meet Shashank Ghosh who was about to
make the film Waisa Bhi Hota Hai. He said the song really fits in well with his film and I did like to use it. After which I did a handful of films like Ram Gopal
Varma’s Mr Ya Miss, I did a couple of tracks for Bappi Lahri for a film that he is composing for, then I did Zinda Hoon Main and now I am doing 1971.
Do you believe in singing only for a particular type of songs or would like to try different genres
If you see my music it is very experimental so I don’t restrict myself. Music is boundless and unlimited and one should really reinvent oneself and be innovative.

Are you doing any private albums?
Yes I am very happy about the fact that I working on my album now. I have finished recording two songs and I am working on the remaining four. The album should be
out in a couple of months.
Who is your favourite singer in Bollywood?
My all time favourite is Asha Bhosle I don’t get to hear her much in films now but I really wish I could because she is a superb singer.
Any particular music director that you would like to work with?
AR Rahman.
You have also sung for Dubai Return.
I have composed the music for two tracks and sung for it. Dubai Return is a funny, dark comedy and the music is an ensemble of different artists. A lot of artists
have lent their voices to this film. I have tried my hand at an item song with a difference and the other one is a very slow and haunting song.
Are you also composing for ‘Shootout at Lokhandwala’?
Yes I am working on the music for Shootout at Lokhandwala. But I have also done two tracks for Dus Kahaniyaan which is another one of Sanjay Gupta’s
films. Both the songs in Dus Kahaniyaan are romantic songs.
How about you’re other films like Pal Pal Dil Ke Pass and Sophia?
Pal Pal Dil Ke Pass is a very old film that I have sung for already. And talking about Sophia, honestly speaking I am not very comfortable with the theme of the
film. I have been offered to do the title track but I am not very sure if I will do it.
Any more upcoming assignments?
At the moment I am awaiting the release of my films which I have sung for. I am also working on my album which has a lot of different artists; I have finished a track
with Bappi Lahri and another one with Tazz from Stereo Nation. So for some tracks I am jamming up with different artists and for the others I am singing solo.
