"A honeymoon can be had only once, at least with the same person" - Amisha Patel Click here to add this article to My Clips

By IndiaFM News Bureau, February 15, 2007 - 06:15 IST

Meet the innocently beautiful Amisha Patel, who made her debut with Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai. Deviating from serious roles in films like Gadar and Ankahee, Amisha is now playing a comic role in Reema Kagti’s upcoming comic flick Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd. Read on, as she talks about being a crazy, cheery Punjabi kudi Pinky in this romantic journey to Goa!

It’s the first time you are working with Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani. What was the experience like?
They are really good producers and a very organized unit. The best part about having a young producer and director is that they are your age and they can sense your vibes. They are of the modern times and understand the cinema of today; they understand the needs of the young audiences. The whole energy was very vibrant and young. They followed the new school of filming. That is why they managed to wrap up the filming in two months, even with so many artists and sync-sound. Even though it seemed so difficult to shoot in Goa, it was a great experience working with Farhan and Ritesh.

Did you ever find that you were insecure working with such a huge ensemble of cast?
No, in fact I was most comfortable, not insecure at all while working with so many actors. Each of our characters is so well etched and so different from the other that you can’t compare and decide who has a better role. When I read the script, I loved the character of Pinky that I am playing in this film so much that I just had to do this film. Pinky is such a lovely, vivacious character. I haven’t played such a comic character in a long time. It took me back to the Kaho Na Pyaar Hai days – I played the same air-headed girl who was so happy to be stranded on an island. Everything was just so happy for her. So my character in this film is similar to the one in Kaho Na Pyar Hai.

Didn’t you take that character quite literally, since you’ve got pink clothes and you are called Pinky?
Yes, the character of Pinky, like me in real life, loves the colour pink. She is very fashion-conscious except that she looks at Versace clothes and copies them from the ones at Chandni Chowk as she is from Delhi. So she believes that she is very fashionable and also a very filmi person. She loves Hindi films. She is always trying to copy all the heroines and always comparing her husband to Shah Rukh, Salman or Hrithik. As a result, everything she wears in outlandish, bizarre. Her hairstyles, her clothes – everything about her is pink. She has got pink luggage and pink vanity case. And she also tries to dresses her husband that way.

Pink is your favourite colour as well. Have you gone that far in your real life?
90% of my clothes and accessories are pink. But they are not outlandish and definitely not from Chandni Chowk! They are definitely classier.

Everybody is talking about the song Sajanji Vaari Vaari – everything looks crazy. You look the craziest…
Actually, Pinky is the craziest in the sense that she is the comic relief of the film. She is the one who rattles and paddles and talks the most. She is obsessed with hair-care and skin-care, which is quite like me in real life, and she is constantly giving people advice on it. When I was sitting with my director Reema Kagti, I said that Pinky is the quintessential soni kudi from Punjab, and she can not go home looking dark. So even if she is going to Goa with all the beaches and sun, she should be carrying an umbrella! So we actually added funny umbrellas with quotes and people’s faces in the film, which was simply hilarious. For Sajanaji Vaari Vaari, we were given a few basic steps, and we asked to accommodate them to suit our characters in the film. So, for any solo step that was given, I completely dramatized it and made it filmy. Pinky is a very filmi character so I added all the jhatkas and matkas because everything Pinky does is over the top.

How was it watching somebody like Kay Kay, lying on the floor and doing a snake dance?
Kay Kay is totally a riot! We were watching the film last Sunday when there was a screening for the cast and crew. And I, who has shot the film with Kay Kay and seen him in every frame, couldn’t stop cracking up. He is just rocking in the film! He is known for this serious, very strict image but he managed to break loose in this particular song, which is amazing, he has done it superbly!

Since you are the character of Pinky, who has been on this extraordinary honeymoon, and if you were to give tips to potential Pinkys who were getting married, what would your tips be?
Well I think for a good honeymoon you have to be completely happy with the man you are marrying and mentally ready to get married – not being forced into it. Otherwise, no matter which part of the world you go to for your honeymoon, you are not going to have a good time. So just be happy knowing that a honeymoon can be had only one, at least with the same person. So enjoy it, also keeping in mind that in future there will be tears. A honeymoon is not just about laughter since it takes time to get used to living with a person – and you are breaking into that on your honeymoon. Expect both happiness and tears on your honeymoon because nothing is perfect. And that is what the film will show you when you watch it.

What kind of attire could you wear on your honeymoon?
I think that really depends on the place that you want to go to. If you are going to a cold place, then keep yourself warm. If you are going to a beach, then wear beach-wear, but please do not dress like Pinky, wearing high heels in the sand and tripping on it! I assure you it will not be comfortable.

And you have to give us tips on the perfect kiss!
Oh, that should not come from me! I wouldn’t know…

Who would you say is your favourite couple in Honeymoon Travels…?
Me and Karan Khanna… Pinky and Vicky is my favourite couple in the film. They are the most and ridiculous couple in the film. Pinky is so bizarre that it is unnatural. She is someone who is not in touch with reality, and that is amazing. Vicky is even more ridiculous because he plays along with her! He dresses in the clothes that she chooses for him, he is made to wear a pendant that has “V” for Vicky. He has to bizarre to marry someone like Pinky!

He is not the type of boy you would want in real life, is he?
In real life, Karan is a very sweet guy, and he is a lovely human being so it is not a problem. He is a good person to have as a life partner.

Why should we go and watch Honeymoon Travels…?
Because it is a fabulous film… It is not claiming to be a Mughal-e-Azam. It is not faffing in the promos. It shows in promos what the movie really is about. It is a simplistic, realistic film, shot with real dialogues, very real characters and real life situations which everybody can relate to, somewhere or the other. Besides, it has got great entertainment, great comedy, great emotions, and fabulous music. So it is just a simple, sweet feel-good film.
