Blog: Campaign to change the term BOLLYWOOD!!
By IndiaFM News Bureau, February 15, 2007 - 09:21 IST
The term BOLLYWOOD, which identifies Indian Films, has always reflected the fact that we are inferior to western films and that we need the help of this term to make an identity for our films in the International market. But, nowadays, our quality of movies is improving drastically and making an identity for themselves. This also coincides with the fact that India is carving a niche for itself in this world. We are hailed by many as one of the future superpowers.
In such a situation, needing 99% of the letters of a foreign film association to market our movies is derogatory. Indian movies should have an independent identity.
Just imagine the condition; if one day, one of our movies becomes a global super hit, it will always be associated as a “Bollywood” movie. The euphoria which follows will always be shadowed by the amusing and subconscious laughter of the rest of the world. We will feel very small indeed.
So, in the same way that India is making an independent mark on the world, we need to identify our films with a new term and market it globally. Let our film makers realize this and push forward with such a campaign.
There is no need to compare Indian movies to Western movies. Our culture, people are very different and we make films based on these sentiments. It identifies with the masses. So, there is no need to develop a complex. When we feel ashamed of our heroes facing a barrage of bullets without one hitting them, just think of James Bond who does the same things and gets to be called as COOL.
If the world things that our song and dance sequences are unreal and amusing, what should we think about their unreal special effects which don’t have an element of reality or humanness to them? Films are mainly made to exaggerate and hence, entertain. So, it is for the filmmaker to decide what form exaggeration to adopt. It could be a song and dance sequence or a dogfight in space. Each one holds good in its respective culture.
So, bloggers, think about changing the term BOLLYWOOD to something unique. Let the Indian movie industry be transformed into a Brand and let it be marketed like one. Like say, mmmm…let me see… how about “FILM INDIA"? I may not be that creative, but I think, it is good for starters. Saying, “Rang De Basanti is a FILM INDIA movie”, feels much more pleasant and Indian than saying “Rang De Basanti is a BOLLYWOOD movie”. All your suggestions are welcome!!
