Wow! I was genuinely impressed with the knowledge bank of my tittle-tattling Aunties. Their conversation was full of colorful tidbits and trivia. So do you wanna know whether Ash will wear Abu –Sandeep or some other designer? Where will the marriage take place? How the Kapoor family might be feeling? Was it Karishma’s loss and Aishwarya’s gain? Was it Salman’s loss and Abhishek’s gain? Will Aishwarya quit Bollywood? For how long the couple would enjoy marital bliss? blah blah blah..If you want to know any of this then join the kitty party or better still get glued to Prime Time News, Newspapers and Radio. Thanks to the media overkill and the falling ethical and intellectual standards for providing fodder for gossip.
On the New Year’s Eve the entire nation got lucky by watching the fluidity of Mallika Sherawat’s dance. The manufactured sexuality, crafted coquettishness and provoking outfit (if there was any) deserved something like half a crore but did it also deserve the overwhelming media attention?
I have set the ball rolling and we can discuss this further.
Lets talk about Sanju baba and how cupid stuck him. The poor chap claims that even when he does nothing he makes news. He cannot afford to appreciate the 24x7 on its toes Media for introducing the two most important women in his life. Or else how would we come to know when Trishala is coming from the US and what Maanyata is doing?
On 9 January 2007 a news swept across all the news channels 'Sanjay Dutt relieved by the court'. 'Sirf Munna Not a bhai' '13 saal ka vanvaas khatam' 'alhough found guilty for possession of armory, Sanjay can breath sigh of relief as all the TADA charges against him are withdrawn' .On the very same day Major Manish H Pitambare lost his life to the country by killing Hisbul Mujahidin's most wanted terrorist Sohel Faisal. Sabse TEZ Aaj Tak, Star News, NDTV India or Sahara Samay made no mention of it. It was briefly covered only by BBC news. Was this news so insignificant that it could not manage 60 seconds of prime time or is it simply less glamorous to hold the TRP?
Trivialisation of news is another serious issue. Consider this. Mika and Rakhi Sawant We all know how Rakhi Sawant got kissed, got wild and got a life.
The most obnoxious are the catch lines. They characterize the going global, thinking local approach and undoubtedly become the key to better viewership and readership. The coverage of fashion show wardrobe malfunction on prime time Star News came out with “Ramp par jalwe bikharne ke dauraan bikhar gayaa aanchal”.. Raunchy ? Sure it is. Then there are few, which would make you all seismic with laughter. “Abhiash now inseparable: Top Astrologer”, “They are trying to break Shilpa”, “Abusive Jade invited to India”, “Kya hoga Shweta Ka?”.
We’re getting almost inured to the occurrence of media professionals asking stupid questions. They have mastered the art of asking wholly inappropriate and highly irrelevant questions. If someone has been kidnapped, raped, molested or has undergone any kind of nasty experience then that person has to bear the brunt. “Aapko kaisa lag rahahai” is what they would blatantly ask. When Shammi Kapoor was in ICU, his younger brother actor Shashi Kapoor was asked the same question to which he smartly retorted that I feel like dancing.
This blizzard 24x7 competition is creating a mad dash to stock upon everything on the name of news. I would not like to believe that the ribbon cutting ceremony by politicians, Shahid Kapur’s lip-lock with Kareena merit more importance than development issues. There is no dearth of news on international affairs, developmental issues and agriculture sector and we know why it is not given a fair time slot.
What is pretty absurd in the scheme of things is making no news NEWS. Next time when you mess up with your girlfriend, landlord, malevolent mother-in-law, crabby boss or anyone for that matter you know where to go. Be Saabse tez and steal the prime time attention
