Even as many sex sirens have gone coy in their recent films, top actresses are surprisingly restoring to the dare-and-bare act.
A couple of years ago, sex and sleaze ruled the marquee, and sex bombs like Mallika Sherawat, Neha Dhupia and Payal Rohatgi showed more skin than acting prowess. But these damsels who followed the mantra that only sex and skin show sells in Bollywood, seem to have now realised that showing skin is not enough and it is acting skills which is needed to thrive in the industry. Mallika Sherawat, was seen fully dressed in Pyaar Ke Side Effects, except for a brief scene in a bikini. Neha Dhupia who made the statement that only SRK or sex sells in Bollywood, was also seen in a salwar-kameez-clad role in Chup Chup Ke. She has even vowed not to do any more sleazy movies, and that she will take up only those roles where she can showcase her acting skills.
So, why have these sex sirens who took pride in their dare-and-bare acts suddenly decided to don a more sober and coy image?
Director Imtiyaz Ali says, "These actresses have realised that they won't have a long-standing career just by shedding clothes. To survive in the industry they need to prove that they can act. They got the much-needed break and recognition by doing movies in which they wore skimpy clothes. Now, they are trying to prove their mettle."
Ruchi Narayan, director, subscribes to the view and says most actresses do the dare-and-bare act at the start of their career to gain popularity. "It's not a new trend. Actresses who enter the industry first try to build a sexy image but, as soon as they gain popularity they turn coy. All noted female actors, be it Sridevi, Madhuri, Karishma or Urmila, have done some very bold films at the early stages of their career to establish themselves," she says.
But on the other hand, top actors like Aishwarya Rai and Preity Zinta suddenly decided to go in for a hot image. They were seen wearing revealing clothes in Dhoom 2 and Salaam Namaste respectively. The question here is, when sex bombs are going in for a demure image why a Aishwarya or Preity need to show the skin, that too at this stage of their careers? "Ash is just showing a different side of hers which is new and unknown to her fans. Every actor has a side which is kept secret and used later to give boost to his or her career," says Ali.
While it's good to know that the likes of Mallika and Neha, for whatever reasons, have decided to go in for coy and demure images, it's sad that top actors like Ash and Preity are going for a bold look. "After a spate of flops, Ash needed a big break, so she had to resort to a bold look in her recent movie, which is unfortunate," concludes Narayan. Guess, It's a case of you gain some, you lose some.
