Awaiting the Dhoom!
By IndiaFM News Bureau, November 24, 2006 - 04:06 IST
I have a gut feeling that Dhoom 2 will be the biggest hit of this year.
I enjoyed the first one, a mindless but unbelievably slick -- by Bollywood standards -- product. It had everything -- eye
candy, good music, fast bikes... It made a star out of a flop actor called Abhishek Bachchan. It even made Uday Chopra
acceptable.
Sure, there was no Ray-esque moment, no reality byte. It was in the best tradition of cinema -- enjoyably escapist, which
is how I like my films to be. Not for me lachrymose fare, thank you. Escapism rocks, baby.
I have a simple rule of thumb to determine if a film will be a hit or flop. The first week turnout at the humongous cinema
near my house has never failed to indicate a film's future. Given its seating capacity, when I usually book my ticket on
Wednesday for the coming weekend, I am mostly alone in the queue. And if it's a full house when I see the film, with no
current booking available, I know the film will do well.
This way I knew Paheli, Swades would be also-rans despite SRK's presence in them. And I knew Krrish, Lage
Raho will break a few records.
My rule of thumb has not failed so far.
And this Wednesday, when I went to book tickets for Dhoom 2, I found an unusual sight before me: a large crowd
waiting in queue to book tickets, something I have never seen at this theatre. It was all students from the college nearby,
and I knew it will take at least 30 minutes for my turn to come. So rather than wait in line I resorted to phone-booking.
My rule of thumb tells me I will enjoy Dhoom 2 even more than the first one, especially because of awesome
Hrithik's presence in it.
My rule of thumb also tells me Dhoom 2 will be the biggest hit in some time.
Wanna bet?
