"There are so many good roles tailored for men and I would like to play them" – Konkona Sen Sharma
By IndiaFM News Bureau, November 9, 2006 - 02:31 IST
Konkona Sensharma didn't have to work hard or resort to any gimmicks to draw attention to herself. Her lineage and her
first film created enough stir to generate curiosity around her. In 'Mr and Mrs Iyer' she carried her character of
innocent victim of circumstances with much convictions and ease. Along with Rahul Bose, she stood her ground easily.
Some called her prodigy while some labeled it as pure stroke of luck. Came 'Page 3' and she put to shame even the
very professional journalists with her easy portrayal of their joy, depression and confusion. After remarkable
performances in films like 15 Park Avenue, Yun Hota To Kya Hota and Omkara, Konkona’s next film Deadline releases
this week.
IndiaFM talks to the actress on 'Deadline – Sirf 24 Ghante'
What is your role in this film?
I am playing a very modern young mother to Princey (the child actor). She is kidnapped and the story is about the trauma
of the young parents and their child.
Did you go into any preparation for this character?
There was no need to prepare because the role is simple. But hard work is always required. You don't need to prepare
but one has to work as per the shift and be dedicated about it. I really liked the script and the character. And I was very
excited about this role as well. I didn't need to do any homework or training for this film. I play a young and a modern
mother whose daughter is kidnapped. Then she and her husband (Rajit Kapur) are given the Deadline of 24 hours to
arrange for money and ransom. The whole film is based on this subject. So it is more about the drama. You don't need
to prepare for such characters; you need to get into it.

You have usually worked in offbeat films and non-masala churning filmmakers. So how did you agree to work with
director Tanveeer Khan?
Tanveer is very intelligent, supportive and has taken a lot of interest in this film. He knows exactly what he wants. His
involvement in the film is very high. He has made this film very smoothly and without any hiccups. I have learned a lot
with him. The script was so well written that in spite of being comparatively new, we could finish the film in three months.
In fact we developed a very good rapport during the making of this film. After my every shot he would call it mind blowing
and excellent. By the end of this film, by the time he would say 'mind' I would react with 'blowing'. It had become quite
funny.

Didn’t you feel any risk since this is just his second film and his first film Madhoshi was a failure?
See, risk is involved in every film and every director whether he is new or experienced. I think that the director needs to
be good, one who can do justice with the script. And I have worked with many new directors. I think the script needs to
be good and strong. It is a thriller suspense film and it has so many talented artistes. I have learnt a lot from them. The film
is very tight and moves fast.
Irrfan Khan is a very seasoned artiste. Did you ever feel the need to work extra hard on yourself when you share the
screen with him?
He is a very seasoned actor and it is great to work with him. There was no insecurity at all. After each shot I would ask
him and he would guide me on how to improve a certain shot. It was good working with him.
You have worked with Sandhya Mridul earlier in Page 3. Was it a conscious decision to work with her again?
It is coincidence that we are together. Initially we both were very excited that we are again working together but we don't
have even one scene together.
You didn’t have any scenes with Irrfan either in Yun Hota To Kya Hota.
(Laughs) Coincidence!
Are you open to doing commercial films?
If by commercial film you mean a money-making film then it is not necessary that a big budget film will really be
successful. It depends on the script, the role and the director.
Are you happy with the kind of films you are getting now?
Yes, they are good but I would prefer if films were not restricted by gender. There are so many good roles tailored for
men and I would like to play them. Actor should not be limited due to their gender.

What irks you?
I can’t stand it when people ask me questions like what I eat or what my fitness regime is. Just because it is expected that
an actor should talk about it one should not give in to it.
